There are only two brief instances in which Riddick reveals its status as a sequel—the opening sequence, where Riddick trades his position as ruler of the "Necromongers" (as last seen in Chronicles of Riddick) for a free ride back to his home planet, and, later, a vague reference to one of the characters in this movie being the father of someone from Pitch Black, the first “Riddick” film. Otherwise--since no special knowledge of Riddick's personality or abilities or past is required to understand and enjoy the picture--the new Riddick adventure, a mash-up of Robinson Crusoe on Mars and Alien, could easily have been called Generic Tough Action Hero's Hostile Planet Adventure. Ah, but that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, as the immortal Bard (you know, Zombie Shakespeare) once wrote. Riddick, although structurally flawed, is ultimately a reasonably entertaining science fiction-action film.
As mentioned above, Riddick decides to go home, but he’s betrayed and stranded on a monster-infested planet. Actually, the villains try to kill him, but not until they’ve landed there, so I’m not certain why they didn’t just jettison him into the void of space rather than setting the ship down and giving him the opportunity to (successfully) avoid execution. However, he’s still stuck on Bad News Planet, fighting off giant zebra-striped jackals and venomous creatures that resemble scorpions crossed with lizards, among other unpleasant fauna. Riddick is up to the challenge, of course, even taming a little zebra-jackal to be his faithful dog Friday. One day, Riddick figures out Bad News Planet is probably not a good place to live, and activates an emergency distress beacon conveniently left there by some previous visitors. This attracts two rocket ships full of mercenaries, one crew led by sinister Ethnic Villain Santana, the other by Boss Johns, who blames Riddick for his son’s death. They both want Riddick's shiny head! Let the Most Dangerous Game begin! But is Riddick the Hunted...or the Hunter? Or both?
Some minor continuity and logic issues aside, the major problem with Riddick is that the film switches modes halfway through—from “Riddick surviving a hostile environment” to “Riddick fighting mercenaries”—and, even more disconcerting, the focus changes from Riddick to the two mercenary teams. It changes back, later, but Riddick is off-screen for an extended period of time in the middle of the movie, as we’re introduced (extensively) to the various people and their conflicting priorities. Maybe the writers said “character development, that’s what we need!” but when you take your protagonist out of the equation, it feels...odd. Riddick becomes a shadowy threat in this section, almost as if he’s the Alien-like villain and the mercenaries are the potential victims and protagonists—they even have a tough Ripley-esque female on board, Dahl (pronounced “Doll,” get it?). This dynamic changes back again later—actually, it morphs into sort of a third situation, as Riddick and the mercs join forces to survive—but the narrative stutter-step still seems ill-conceived.
Overall, though, Riddick is fairly well-done. The CGI is satisfactory (I might quibble about the monster designs, but I always do that) and the other effects are also convincing. This definitely does not appear as if it was shot with the Arizona desert or Bronson Caverns standing in for Bad News Planet (it was apparently made in Montreal). The cast doesn’t feature any major names other than Vin Diesel—Karl Urban has a cameo appearance, but I’m not sure he’s a household name anywhere other than the Urban household—but everyone looks the part and performs adequately.
Diesel himself is fine in a role which requires almost no “acting”—even the various mercenaries have more dialogue and characterisation than Riddick—but he has the proper physical presence, growly voice, and stern facial expression for the part. Having not seen the previous two “Riddick” movies, I’m not sure if he’s given more to do in those (I would suspect so—heck, he has more personality in the Fast and Furious pictures, not known for their elaborate portraits of interpersonal drama), but Riddick is short on introspection and long on montages showing the protagonist striding across a ruined landscape and fighting unpleasant monsters (and people).
Without attempting to define my terms, Riddick is an old-fashioned science-fiction/action film, relatively narrow in scale, efficiently assembled, adequately produced, and in the final estimation, satisfactory entertainment for those seeking an hour and half’s worth of escapist fun.
