Okay so I work for uber and lyft, and I'm trying to correct misinformation that's spreading like wildfire in the wake of what happened to that woman, but for the sake of my sanity, especially as a female driver, here's a post you can share.
People keep telling everyone "Make sure you ask the driver who they're there to pick up. Never get into the car unless they give you the name, don't offer it, etc." But that's very incorrect. Your uber driver is NOT supposed to tell you who they're there to pick up, for THEIR safety. This is because people will try to steal rides, and basically say "oh yeah, I'm totally that person, I'm coming in." Happens to me all the time, especially during busy hours, and especially especially when dealing with drunks. If you get real belligerent about demanding this, there's a decent chance they will leave you and cancel the ride. You're supposed to check the car make/model (which many people don't know, so the next steps are more important), the license plate number, and then ask the driver what THEIR name is. Check to make sure the picture of the driver matches the drivers appearance. You will be given all that in the app. They should provide it, and then ask what your name is, which is the information they have. This way, both of you can confirm the others identity safely.
Of course, the exchange doesn't always go exactly like that, because we're tired customer service workers just like any cashier or whatever, but that's why there are multiple steps to ensure your safety, and theirs. Especially as a woman driver, keep in mind that the passenger is not the only one at risk in this situation, which is why the system is set up the way it is.
