This broke my heart it’s more clear from the novel but Riftan always felt like he wasn’t enough for her. He was just a knight (a powerful one yes but he wasn’t from a noble bloodline) he worked his way up from being a poor blacksmiths helper to where he is now. But Maxi’s descendants were actually royalty in the past. She is technically of noble blood! Riftan obsesses with giving Maxi the best of the best thinking she grew up with everything she could ever want. He knows nothing of the abuse she got from her father. He feels like she went from a life of pampering and excess and now is just the wife of a knight! It hurts him. And this scene just hits differently if you read the novel. He feels like he is dragging her down and he just wants her to have the best of everything not understanding he is enough to make her happy 😩😭
When maxi says this she is proud of it but he sees it as an insult 😭😭😭😭
