❝Don’t mind him,❞ she said with a nod at the Besalisk that had been causing the other some trouble. She had seen him around here enough to know who he was and that he had a bigger mouth than he did any- thing else. ❝He’s all talk. He isn’t going to lay a finger...any of them actually-❞ She pauses to make a face. ❝-on you. Not unless he wants to lose some in return.❞

The whitewashed walls, stench of chemicals, whir of machinery—all was not unfamiliar, but respite had not yet kissed away the years of pain. She was so tired now; her head filled with unsung thoughts of guilt and grief, both her own and of those around her. Ever thinking, they were; their minds were never at rest, some regretting what it was that they did, most simply looking ahead to the future. She was so tired now. She did not think a life of freedom a possibility.
Even as another day of scientific endeavour drew to a close, she found no peace; what remaining senses she had were constantly assaulted by the mere nature of her ❛home.❜ As men and women of science (who thought themselves gods) bid their farewell for the night, she was left standing, aimless, at a loss behind a thick pane of glass. Just a subject; just a specimen. No, not just a specimen—their weapon in their crusade against impurity.
The router would change tonight, the security staff stationed in place of the other team. After all, a classified operation could not afford a sudden, unexpected attempt at escape from their subject like many years before. She heard footsteps; most ought to have left by now. The experiment approached the observation glass meekly.
❝Is someone there ? Docteur Weaver, is that you ?❞
