Before and after, example!!
I removed the rig, and and extra shadow on the left side (i did my best with the lighting at the time, i really did) but i had two shadows in some scenes and had to remove the extra one in post.

A clean plate is super important when shooting stop-motion scenes.
Reminder: it is a photo of your scene but without your puppets or moving elements in them. The clean plate will help you in post-production for when you are erasing elements you want to erase such as shadows or rigs.
HOWEVER when exporting some of my scenes and working on them in post, i realized i forgot to take images for the clean plate. (me dumb)
In this case, i can try to make a clean plate. I went into photoshop and took one of my images and decided to use the clone stamp to erase the areas i knew i was going to be working on. It’s not perfect at all and really not a practical way to do things.....but mistakes happen....it’s best to make a clean plate in the first place.
(i erased some of Norman’s body since i knew this area was where the rig moved a bit)

10 scenes of rig removal have been completed! (might have small revisions tobe done at the far end, but still) youppi!!
More on my process!
With the mask, i basically create all these little points. These little points are draw all around Norman, here, to outline his shape. The mask will hide any rig, or shadow that i don’t want in the final footage!
Frame by frame, i move around the little points! It has to match the movement of the character!
Long process, but that’s what it is!
This is a little example of Norman on the rig! The rig is stuck into a little space i made in his back. It allows me to move Norman around a lot more easier.
I have put the footage into After effects. Underneath, is something called a clean plate! (will further elaborate this in a future post where i will teach you about this some more!) In short, the clean plate is an image of my background without anything in it.
I made a mask in after effects and made mask as “subtract’ which makes whatever is in the mask disappear!
From yesterday: Rig removal and cleanup (before is above, after is below). It’s like this, but for video, so sometimes the masks have to animate. Not too much work, but there are 19 of these scenes, so it adds up. Also, the scenes are many minutes long, so the render of all the scenes was like 10 hours!
