EXUCSE ME.... WHAT THEORY

i know a lot of us think it is about his past relationships etc. but. i think it is about himself.

rear view is a mirror ? in which you can see your reflection, or look behind you, to get that view. this is zayn forgiving himself. talking about how it is ok to be himself for once..

he sings  ‘Cause I have no time to help you find / All the words / Melodies and memories / Stories that sound absurd / I will tell no lies.’ which is basically speaking about all that he’s achieved in the past and it might sound too good to be true but it is.

he then goes on to assure himself that he’ll be there with whatever decision he’ll make he’ll back himself on it with ‘I’ll go wherever you are / I’ll follow behind’

this next part is him talking about how he’s gonna have to start all over again, and just to find himself he had to give up on another part of him and all the loved ones (the boys). and it wasn’t easy. to lose the ones who’ve loved you for so long, been there for you. and to give up on all that he’s achieved.

Heard about all the things you’ve done / And all the wars that you’ve been in / Heard about all the love you lost / It was over before it began / Heard about all the miles you’ve gone / Just to start again

he mentions about needing a ‘friend’ someone who’d understand him but it is basically just him telling himself that he will be the friend that he needs, he’ll believe in himself enough to make up for all the times he might’ve needed the validation from someone else. he’d give himself the push needed to breakout and be who he wants to be. 

how he really tried to love the part of himself that was in one direction but that wasn’t him. he wasn’t being honest. he’d just doubted himself. and now he no longer has to / nor wants to / because he was basically looking in the rearview (his past self) and now he’s not anymore because he’ll be the friend he really needs.

so basically the song is about z forgiving himself :-) and apologizing for keeping that part of himself hidden for so long :-) and i’m sad.
