2 weeks on

Since 5am this morning I have officially been an expat living in Ghana for 2 weeks. The reality is I feel like I’ve been here for months.

This isn’t the beginning of some cheesy ramble about how much I’ve learnt in those 2 weeks…but I feel I should make reference to what I now know about Ghana and what living here is like.

I now know what rain really is. I know how to hide from it and I accept that all clothes and footwear worn in and around the actual precipitation time will be ruined. Frankly it would just be easier if we all walked around in our birthday suits and hit the showers on our return.

I know that Ghanaians consider my chin fascinating and somewhat beautiful. The pointy awkwardness of it has been the topic of many conversations with the boys and people I’ve met.

I now know that I can easily, without blinking, live with a multitude of bugs.The spiders are the real heroes as they perform a sophisticated clean up operation on everything that doesn’t make it through the night.

Before I left my friend Ruth said to me that Africa is like other beautiful areas of the world, but in Technicolor and she was so right. I expected dry, sand, desert, but what I got was the most incredible scenery and colours, where every morning I feel like skipping to work, as if in a movie. I will never again be able to jump/squeeze onto the Northern line without serious depression.

The boys I am working with are the most magnificent, hard working and talented bunch of kids I have ever met. I genuinely feel privileged to be a part of it.

Nobody here can believe I’m 26. Maybe I’ll come back 24.
