The evening sun glistened on the dunes, turning the air into a flickering mirage. The sand began to cool under his paws, allowing the bustling life of the desert to crawl out of its hiding places. A small brown bird had come to rest on his neck. It sang a last farewell to the daylight as the Karkadann began to move. The bird was safe but the oryx in the distance were quick to move away. The singing went on. 

The Karkadann was a large creature, large enough to fell an elephant with its curved horn. He trotted along at a leisurely pace, not hurried by the descending darkness. His claws kicked up sand but the wind swept his tracks away like a faithful companion. One leathery ear twitched as the unicorn bent down its long neck to drink from the water that beckoned in pool of the oasis. He could hear someone approach him but it was of no interest to his animal mind. He drank, the water turned clear and clean. His small feathered companion hopped down to bathe. 

“You shouldn’t be here.” A steady growl came out of the monster’s throat, his own voice vibrating in the earth beneath his feet.
