„Grace,” you laughed as you eyed the mistletoe your best friend had put up. “Don’t you think this is a bit… too much? I thought it was just your colleagues and a few other people coming over?”
Your best friend grinned. “Oh, you have no idea what you’re talking about. This sets the mood.”
“And what mood exactly would that be?”
The junior agent rolled her eyes with a smile. “Festive! Besides, you can never know what will happen.”
You raised your eyebrows at her. “Yeah, right. I had no idea you wanted to get laid so desperately,” you snickered, hurrying into the kitchen before she could throw something in your direction. Plus, you had promised to help with the food, and not a single thing was ready to serve just yet.
Another hour had passed when the doorbell rang for the first time.
“Jane!” you heard Grace exclaim from the hallway. “Come in, come in!”
And so, it began.
You had no idea how many people were already in your apartment when the doorbell rang yet again. By now, you had adapted to the noise and let all the conversations fade into the background while you focused on another batch of puff pastry pinwheels.
“Cho! Rigsby! Finally! I was scared you wouldn’t show.”
Cho shook his head. “Mister Loverboy here wanted to get flowers first. Apparently, you’ve really convinced him that your roommate is his perfect match.”
“No!” the taller man exclaimed. “It’s simply the polite thing to do.”
Grace smiled knowingly. “Sure, Rigsby. Come on, let’s get you a vase for those flowers.”
You heard the footsteps coming towards you and turned around immediately, a full container in your hands.
“Grace, the next batch is re-”
Never in your life had you seen such an attractive man. He was tall, and his smile was literally to die for.
“Wayne, this is Y/N. Y/N this is Wayne Rigsby.”
“You are Rigsby? The Rigsby that Grace told me about? The constant snacker Rigsby?”
A slight blush appeared on Rigsby’s cheeks. “I guess that would be me. And I’m assuming you’re the roommate.” You nodded without a word, still baffled by the man in front of you. “Well,” he breathed out, “it’s really nice to meet you. I’ve heard so much about you. I, uh, I brought flowers. Because, you know, you are so kind to let us use your apartment and help with all the food and… yeah.” He handed you the bouquet, and you couldn’t help but smile.
“These are my favorites! How did you know?”
“Maybe a little elf couldn’t keep her mouth shut”, Grace admitted sheepishly, looking first at you and then at her colleague. “Don’t screw this up, Rigsby." she said as she took the tray from your hands. "I’ll leave you to it!”
And that is when it hit you. Grace Van Pelt, your best friend and roommate, was also your matchmaker. You couldn’t be mad, not when he was standing right in front of you. “Well, Wayne”, you smiled genuinely, “would you maybe like a puff pastry pinwheel?”
