Chapter Two - Crossing Paths
“I’m on my way to the house; I should be there in about ten minutes. Nicole is with me.” Robyn said into her phone. She was talking to Tasha who seemed just as interested in this case as Robyn was. Today was the first day that Robyn would be meeting the defendant. She had to get him the stacks of paper work he had to sign and basically get his side of the story. This was the beginning of a long tedious process and she had to make sure that if he was innocent she did everything in her power to prove his innocence. But that would be only if he was willing to work hard for it.
“Okay, good. Just shoot me a text when you get there so I know you made it.” Tasha said on the other end of the line.
“We will.” Robyn said as she hung the phone up. She put it in the cup holder that was in front of the glove compartment.
“That was Tasha?” Nicole, another lawyer that worked at the firm and Robyn’s good friend asked. Nicole had been at the firm two years longer than Robyn but easily made friends. Nicole was beautiful and many men in the court were intimidated by her and Robyn’s team. They always tackled cases together. Robyn had a fiery streak but for the most part was pretty calm in the court room. Nicole on the other hand meant everything she said. If she hurt your feelings she had no regrets. She meant business. Her dimples and bright smile were deception to how she handled business.
“Of course, you know she wasn’t going to let us get over here and not hear from her all day. How was your date last night? Did she do a good job?” Robyn asked referring to the blind date that Tasha had set Nicole up on. Nicole was always complaining that she needed a man so everyone in the firm literally did everything they could to find her someone.
“Hell, no. Girl. He was such an asshole. He literally talked about himself the whole night. And he has a daughter. I don’t mind you having kids and being proud and talking about them. But I don’t want to know that the way I eat my pasta reminds you of your daughter. Like what the hell?” Nicole said shaking her head.
“He was really buff. What did you expect? Buff niggas love talking about themselves. That’s why they get buff so you can get reeled in by their large arms and thick necks, and then boom! You’re on a date with the most conceited buff nigga in the world. I dated one before I met Derek, girl I never been so excited to see Derek walk into my house.” Robyn said laughing.
“I just give up honestly. I’m not going gay either so I’m literally going to just have to adopt me a little African baby girl and live by myself Because I cant. I’ve had to have dated every man in New York. This is getting ridiculous.” She put her head back on the head rest and let out a long sigh.
“No you haven’t bitch. Listen, Derek has this really cute friend. I’ve been trying to feel him out and see if he’s any good and I think he might be. He’s really sweet to me anyway and he doesn’t have any kids so you can be the first mother of his child. Ya’ll would be perfect together, visually anyway. I don’t know how he is with intimidating personalities.” Robyn said laughing.
“Bitch, show me a picture. And he can handle this. I’m not even as intimidating when I’m not on the courtroom floor. If he can handle it, he’s a real man. And I love me a good real man.” Nicole said as she sat up now interested in what Robyn said.
Robyn grabbed her phone and slid to unlock the screen. She went to her pictures and pulled up his Instagram. She first showed her a picture of just his face.
“Isn’t he fine?” Robyn said handing Nicole the phone. Nicole looked at the picture and her dimple slowly started to appear in her right cheek.
“He’s cute, but what does that body look like? Is he beefy?” She asked furthermore investigating this picture.
“Slide it up, the next one I think is his body.” Robyn said turning left onto the street the house was on.
Nicole slid the picture up. She bit her lip and then looked again.
“Oh, girl yes. Let me get his number so we can set this up right now.”
“His name is Jarrod, and he’s a police officer for NYPD. He’s 27 and he lives in upper Manhattan.” Robyn said as she undid her seatbelt.
“When can I marry him?” Nicole asked jokingly.
“He was at the house this morning, maybe by the time we leave here, if he’s still there I’ll tell Derek to stall him out so you guys can meet.”
“That’ll work, and I look good. Yes. Finally. I hope he’s worth it girl.” Nicole was sporting a Gucci Fuchsia Belted skirt with an Alexander Wang Cropped top. She completed the look with Shoe Republic Rucy pumps in black and silver stud earrings.
Robyn stepped out of the car and opened the back door to get a bad that was carrying paper work and her laptop in it. Today she wore a Miss Selfridge Pink Floral Jacquard Bra Top with a IRO Black Geometric Stitch Leather skirt. She also wore a Forever New Kristen Waterfall white biker jacket over top. She sported Sergio Rossi Nude Uptown Pumps. She accessorized the look with and Anne Klein Rose Gold –Tone Watch with a mother of pearl Dial and chronic gold rings on her middle and ring fingers. She carried a Chanel Vintage Hot Pink Fuchsia Quilted Caviar Classic double flap bag which housed her Mac Girl About Town lipstick and gold IPhone 5s.
“He will be honey. I wouldn’t put you on with an asshole.” She said as they stood at the door waiting for someone to answer. It was an amazingly beautiful August day in New York. It wasn’t even close to being too hot and the breeze through the city was absolutely gorgeous.
When someone finally answered the door both of the ladies looked at each other. Nicole of course would be the first one to speak. She needed to let him know that they meant business.
“Hi, I’m Nicole Smith and this is Robyn Fenty and we’re here on behalf of Daniel Lawrence Law Firm for a Rakim Mayers, would you happen to be him?”
*
“Damn.” Rakim said looking at the beautiful ladies standing at his door. He wasn’t expecting them to home to his door at all. It caught him by surprise actually.
“Do you mind if we come in?” Robyn asked. He stood to the side and let both ladies walk in to the apartment. He couldn’t help but catch a glimpse of both women’s asses as they were both wearing tight fitting skirts. They knew they were wrong for that.
“Get your looks in now, because after I figure out who you are and what you’ve done, it’s strictly business.” Nicole said picking up on the fact that he was staring for quite some time. “Do you have somewhere we could sit and discuss things?” She asked looking at him in the eye. He showed them to the small kitchen table they had set up in the kitchen. It could only sit three people but he didn’t mind standing if they needed room. He watched them as they pulled out folders and iPad’s and mac books and all sorts of things. It was folders full of papers and legal documents. He started to become overwhelmed in it all.
“We aren’t what you were expecting huh? You thought it was gonna be some old white lady or man who doesn’t really give a fuck about what happens to you huh? Well, that’s not the case with us. We actually give a fuck about you and if you cooperate, we promise you’ll be a free man by the end of the trial. When we ask you a question don’t lie, state facts. If you know something that isn’t in these police reports, tell us. Don’t think of as your lawyers, think of us as your boys or a human diary. Anything that you say to us is between us. We have no rights to discuss anything outside of this house or between other persons. All we ask is that you respect us and you’ll get what you want in the end. We good?” Robyn took a deep breath after reciting her terms and conditions. She looked him in the eye and waited for his response.
He simply shook his head.
“You don’t speak much, huh?” Nicole asked looking at him.
“I do, but I mean, I’m kind of scared right now.” He said running his hand down the back of his neck.
“Mission accomplished.” Nicole said as she started to laugh. He noticed her deep dimples and bright smile.
“Huh?” He asked looking at her and then at Robyn.
“Don’t be afraid of us, Rakim. In the end we’re your biggest fans when it comes to that courtroom. You don’t need to be scared of the people defending you.” Robyn said shooing Nicole off. “She’s small but she packs a big punch and deep down she’s a softy, so don’t fall for this big macho act.”
“Why would you lie? I’m a thug!” Nicole said throwing up the west coast sign.
“Anyway, we should probably get started on getting all of this paper work signed.” She said shooing Nicole off.
“Here is pretty much all of the legal work you need to look at, basically our terms and conditions, what our service to you is, and a contract. Make sure you read that because we don’t want any problems if things don’t go your way.” Robyn said handing him a stack of papers and a pen.
“If there is anything you just don’t agree with let us know and if it’s unreasonable or doesn’t fit the circumstances of your case we can make adjustments. Nicole said as she pulled out her laptop. Rakim hadn’t read this much since he dropped out of school. This was a lot of bullshit he had to endure for something he didn’t do. He was going through a lot and for each line he read the bullshit kept pilling on.
He spent a good thirty minutes on the packet going over the rules and how things would work on his trial. He didn’t understand half of the shit, but these women seemed to have known what they were doing so he didn’t doubt them. He took the pen and initialed and signed on the marked areas.
“Anything else?” He asked setting the papers down on the table. He looked at both of the women who were busy typing on their computers. Robyn looked up but Nicole was too into what she was doing to even notice he had said something.
“Not right now. We do have to ask you a few questions and then I guess you can tell us what you believe or know happened and then we can go from there.”
Rakim shook his head and waited for Nicole to look up at him since she was the one who was going to be the one with questions.
“Rakim Mayers. 25. Harlem New York. Unemployed. African American. 5’9. Correct?” Nicole asked as she finally raised her head from her laptop.
“Yeah.” Rakim simply answered. It amazed him that they could have all of this information on people. Every detail of your life could become theirs if you did something wrong. It worried him to a certain extent. What if they knew about the things he had done before.
“Alright, so Rakim. Tamara King was your girlfriend. Correct?”
“Yeah.”
“And on June 19th, she was murdered, correct?” Robyn asked sensing his shift in mindset and attitude.
“Yeah.”
“Do you know who murdered her?”
“Not exactly.”
“Was it you?” She asked. She hesitated to ask the question because she knew deep down that he didn’t have anything to do with it. She knew he loved this girl and it was hurting him to even bring up the fact that she was gone.
“No. Not at all.”
“Was it gang related?”
“Probably.”
“We need something more than probably, Mr. Mayers.” Nicole said butting into the questioning.
“Yeah. It was.” He said looking at her.
His answers were short and simple and he had absolutely no intentions of opening up any further. The women sat there for hours, shuffling through various paper works and showing him pictures of evidence they had collected. They asked him questions every now and then, but basically paid him no attention. He watched them work, both very focused and determined. He never had anybody as focused to get him out of trouble as these two were besides his mama and Tamara.
The hours snuck by and before they knew it, it was almost one o clock. They had been working for five hours nonstop, but it didn’t seem to bother them. Rakim, however had gotten bored watching them do all of this work and feeling like he was helpless.
“You want something?” Nicole asked as she stood up and straightened out her skirt. She stacked up the papers neatly and closed her lap top.
“Just get me some sesame chicken and house fried rice with an eggroll and a water.” Robyn said leaning back in her chair.
“Rakim, you want anything?” Nicole asked grabbing Robyn’s keys.
“No, thank you. I’m good.” He said shaking his head.
“I’m getting you something anyway. I’ll be back in a few.” Nicole said as she left out of the front door.
“Don’t tell her no, cause she’ll do it anyway.” Said Robyn.
He smiled for the first time of the day which was a surprise to Robyn. He had a beautiful smile and definitely should be smiling a lot more.
“I see.” He simply said and sat back in his chair.
She saw the pain evident in his face from bringing all of this back up again. He had to have felt like it had just happened all over again.
“Rakim, listen, I know what you’re going through and I know it’s tough. Losing somebody to the streets is one of the worst pains ever because in some type of way you feel you’re responsible for it. Some type of way you feel like it was supposed to be you and not them. But it wasn’t. So now you have to live here and sulk and grieve. I could only imagine the pain you must feel of being accused of murdering someone you loved. It’s ridiculous and I can see it all over your face that you’re innocent. But what you have to do to convince others of that innocence, is be strong. Be strong for her because that’s what she would’ve wanted. She wants you to never forget her, but move on accept what happened. If you could’ve changed what happened, you would have. But that’s not how God planned this. We question him and we wonder why he does things this way, but we have to believe that someway and somehow this is what was supposed to happen.”
“I just don’t get why when I finally find happiness; it gets taken away from me. I was happy for once in my fucking life. I didn’t even wanna fuck with the streets anymore. But it’s all I got to focus on now. Cause I don’t know what else to do. “He said putting his face in his palms. She walked over to him and sat in the seat next to him. She grabbed his hand and put it in hers. It was a pushy gesture seeing as though they had just met, but a much needed one for this moment.
“You aren’t ever going to get it. I don’t think the purpose of life is to get it. I think we’re just here to live and die. It’s okay to not understand. I promise you it is.” He looked down at her hand in his. He noticed a tattoo creeping from underneath her white jacket on her forearm.
“You can have tattoos?” he asked looking at it. She quickly pulled the jacket over it so that it was no longer exposed.
“It’s not picture perfect for a lawyer, but it’s not forbidden either.” She said standing up. Her phone was lying on the table buzzing off the hook.
“Hey.” She said answering the phone. It was Derek. He was probably calling to see where she was and if she could come back and make him and his boys something to eat knowing him.
“Are you still working?” He asked on the other end. She could hear Jarrod laughing in the background at something or someone.
“Yeah, Nicole just went to go get us some lunch. It might not take as long as I thought it was going to take today though so I may be home a little bit earlier than I thought.”
“That’s perfect.” He said lustfully into the phone. His voice was groggy like he had just woke up or been smoking or something. Regardless, it was turning Robyn on, inconveniently.
“If my house is a fucking mess it’s not going to be anything. I can promise you that.” She said into the phone. Rakim looked up with wide eyes. She glanced at him and then looked away.
“We just chilling on the couch baby. We not doing much of anything. Your house is the same way you left it minus a few beers. ”
“Oh, tell Jarrod do not leave until we get there. Stall that nigga if you have to, I don’t care if he has to work.”
“Why?”
“I want him to meet Nicole. Don’t tell him that though, just make sure when we get there he’s there.” She said as she closed down her laptop. She didn’t know how much work she would be getting done now that Derek had called and basically seduced her into going home with just one sentence.
“I’ll try my best. I can’t make no promises though.”
“Alright, well, I’ll see you when I get home.” She said twirling her black hair around her finger.
“Alright baby. I love you.”
“I love you too.” She said as she hung up the phone and set it down on the table. She looked at it for a while as if she needed to verify if the conversation they just had, with no arguing was real. She got lost in her thoughts, almost forgetting Rakim was sitting in the chair across from her.
“That’s your nigga?” He asked looking at her, speaking without being asked a question for the first time.
She chuckled a little bit. “Yeah, that’s my nigga.”
“You love him?” He asked sitting up in his chair and leaning forward. He put his elbow on the table and rested his head on his fist.
“Sometimes.” She answered honestly.
“Sometimes? What does that mean? How do you love somebody sometimes?” Rakim’s face turned into a frown. He didn’t understand how you could love someone sometimes, especially since they could be here today and gone tomorrow. What if the sometime you love them isn’t happening and they leave you on earth? You live with regrets!
“We argue a lot and sometimes I feel he isn’t faithful to me because I work long hours and I’m not home as much as he wants me to be. We don’t communicate like we should. But for some reason he makes me happy. In the weirdest way, no matter how much I’m crying before I close my eyes I’m happy that I’m falling asleep next to him and waking up in his arms. I don’t know if I’m happy with the thought of a man’s presence or what. I guess I’m just confused.”
“When you love someone you know it, and you don’t doubt that shit, cause they aren’t here forever. You don’t have time to fucking doubt whether you love someone.” Rakim said angrily. He wasn’t angry at Robyn, he was angry at the way she thought about love. To play with something as beautiful as love? She must not be experiencing it correctly.
She looked at him and then back into her lap. This wasn’t business and she was lucky Nicole wasn’t there to remind her of that. She needed to hear that from someone. She was confused and she needed to figure out what she wanted from Derek and she needed to figure it out fast.
Nicole came back a few moments later with the Chinese food. For Rakim to not want anything he sure did enjoy his meal. The decided that they had done a decent amount of work for the first day, and most likely after a few more days Rakim would start opening up to them once he got to know them a little bit better.
“We’ll be back in a day or two to do a little bit more on this case. We don’t usually work Wednesdays but we may make an exception since this is a pretty big case. Do you have any questions?” Nicole asked Rakim as she put her bag over her shoulder and looked at him.
He shook his head. “Thank you,” was all he said to her.
“You’re welcome.” She said smiling at him.
“It was nice meeting you, Rakim.” Robyn said as she stepped out of the door frame.
“Nice meeting you too.”
*
“Robyn, are you sure I look okay?” Nicole asked freshening up her lipstick in the visor mirror before they got out of the car.
“I’m positive; your ass looks amazing in that skirt, if he says no he’s gay.” She said taking the keys out of the ignition.
“Why the fuck am I nervous? I’ve never been nervous about meeting a guy; this shit is not for me. “
“Hm, maybe he’ll be the one to break you down and make you say yes sir instead of the other way around.” Robyn said pushing the elevator button to the 6th floor.
“That’s my biggest fear. My mama says that’s the day I’ll lose all control and be putty in a man’s hands!”
“That’s an understatement girl. Being in love is becoming putty in a man’s hands. He lets you think you’re in charge and you damn well may be, but you’re always going to be his putty and he can shape you any way he wants if he says the right thing.”
“You’re scaring me, Rob.” Nicole said looking Robyn in her eyes.
“It’s a beautiful thing if it’s with the right one.” She said smiling at her and stepping out of the elevator. She walked down the hall until she got to the door of her condo. She looked back at Nicole who was looking down at her feet.
“Wait!” Nicole said, scaring Robyn. “Is there something in my teeth?”
“No girl, now stop stalling and come on. I’m ready to take these shoes off of my damn feet.” She turned the door and heard the men arguing about sports. She could hear the debates about whether LeBron was going back to Cleveland or not and where they thought Carmelo was moving to.
She walked into the living room and found them both siting on the sofa. The house smelled of strong marijuana and beer. Robyn rolled her eyes at the scent. If a police were to walk by or her boss show up she’d be done.
“Why the fuck didn’t you spray some blunt power or something. It’s loud as hell in here!” She said when she walked over to Derek.
“I forgot baby, damn. How was your day?” He asked standing up and kissing her on the cheek. He snuck a grab at her ass and then walked over to the counter to get the blunt spray. He sprayed it a couple of times and almost instantly the smell was gone.
“It was fine, how was yours?” She asked looking around, making sure her house was still in order. She was pleasantly surprised. Besides the earlier odor, he had behaved pretty well for what she could see.
“It was chill. You ate already?” He asked walking into the kitchen.
“I had Chinese for lunch, are you hungry?” She asked walking into the kitchen. Nicole was still standing by the door, looking at Robyn. Robyn chuckled and told her to bring her ass in the house.
“Yeah, but I can get us something delivered if you don’t feel like cooking.” Robyn almost choked on air. What? He didn’t want her to slave over a hot stove and prepare his favorite dishes? He was being nice for a change? What did he do…
“That’s fine. You can get me whatever you get…. Hey Jarrod, how are you?” she asked walking over to him and giving him a hug. He stood up and held her hand as he looked her up and down.
“I’m fine, but not as fine as you. Derek, you got you a baddie.” He said admiring her long legs and green eyes.
“Boy stop it.” Robyn said laughing at him. “Oh, this is my friend and co-worker Nicole. Nicole, this is Jarrod.”
“It’s nice to meet you.” Nicole said sticking out her hand.
“It’s a pleasure.” He said admiring her smile. His whole demeanor had changed. He went from being childish and playful, to turning into this elegant and handsome young man.
She had to look away as his lips were capturing her attention. It had been almost a year since Nicole had gotten any and the way this man was looking at her was sure to short come that. She blushed as he asked for her number and put his in her phone. They talked for a while, and flirted and hugged a couple of times. Robyn stood back in satisfaction. She had only hooked a few people up in the past and well let’s just say they were all happily married.
“Robyn, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Where the hell are you going?” She asked as she looked at Nicole who was looking into Jarrod’s eyes lustfully. She was lost and at that moment Robyn knew she had created a monster.
“Don’t do anything you might regret!” Robyn called out. She heard the door close and she knew there was nothing more she could do at that point.
*
“Mhm, why are you in such a good mood?” She asked him as he kissed the middle of her stomach. He unzipped the zipper in the back of her shirt. He pulled it off. He left warm wet kisses on her stomach and trailed them down to the waistline of her skirt.
“I can’t pleasure my girl the way she deserves after she has been working hard?” he asked looking up at her as his tongue traveled down her body. He pulled off the black leather skirt and left kisses in between her thighs.
“Mm, you can do whatever you want.” She arched her back as she felt his wet tongue hit her flesh. The only thing separating him from her was the thin piece of cloth from her thong. It wasn’t for long though. Within moments he snatched them down and almost magnetically found his lips on hers. He kissed it slowly causing her to moan slightly. He let his tongue glide across her length as she put her hand in his head full of curls. She yanked at them causing him to go harder and deeper. He entered her slowly. She let out a small moan and lowly moaned his name.
She let her head fall back in pleasure. She was in a wonderful world of bliss and she didn’t want it to stop. But when she closed her eyes she remembered the conversation she had with Rakim. She didn’t want to be in a love where she doubted who she was in love with. She wanted to get the same thing she was giving in a relationship.
“Derek,” She tried to say without moaning but it didn’t work. He only used it as encouragement. He kissed her from her belly button up to her neck. He left a small kiss on her bottom lip before he pulled his sweatpants. If he had been wearing boxers she might have gotten a word in, but he was free-balling. He grabbed the head of his member and ran it up and down her length. He bit his lip and looked into her eyes.
“Derek, baby..” She begged, not really wanting him to stop. He slowly started to enter her and with every small thrust he went deeper. She whimpered quietly the faster he went. When he slowed down she grabbed the back of his neck and pulled him down towards her. She kissed him on his neck and left a hickey between his shoulder and the base of his neck. After they both met in ecstasy for the second time he laid on top of her. He kissed her softly and rolled over on his back. He pulled her on top of him and that usually meant that it was her turn to return the favor. She decided that it would be a good time to get what she had to say in.
“Baby, we need to talk.” She ran her fingers down the front of his body and looked into his eyes.
“And this is the best time for that?”
“Well it’s the only time I know you’re paying attention to me, so I might as well.” She only had his full attention when she was making him dinner or fucking him. And he didn’t want her to cook tonight so she had to get it in somewhere.
“What? What do we need to talk about?”
“Us,” she said as she looked to her side. She did a double take when she saw what seemed to be a gold condom wrapper on the nightstand. She looked at him and then back at the open wrapper.
“What the fuck is that?” she said pointing to her latest discovery. They never used condoms. Derek was king pullout and Robyn was on birth control.
“Robyn…” Derek said as he shook his head.
“No, Derek you been fucking bitches in my house!?”
“No Robyn, I haven’t. If you weren’t trying to accuse me of shit, you’d realize that it’s still in the package! Stop tryna make shit wrong between us! I’m with you; you’re the one I wanna be with! Stop tryna make me out to be a nigga that I’m not!”
“Why is it open then?” she asked shying away and becoming less bold.
“I don’t know, I found it in some pants. You just started this birth control shit two months ago Robyn, it could’ve been from then.”
She looked at him in his eyes. She could sense his obvious frustration with her. He wouldn’t even look her in her eyes anymore.
“I’m sorry baby. I really am.” She kissed him on the lips but he wasn’t feeling it. She kissed him down the front of his body and slowly rolled her mouth down his length. His eyes closed in pleasure. He began to grunt and she swallowed him deeper.
“Ah Shit, baby. I forgive you.” He said as he wrapped his hands in her hair.
She deserved the world and maybe he was trying to give it to her.
