I'm not sure it's so much a general "people were much smaller" as much as things in the average size ended up well worn and didn't survive the decades.
That’s definitely a factor, but not the only one. People were smaller on average, but there were still plenty of people who wore what we would consider ‘normal’ modern sizes. Clothing was cut differently, though-- most dresses from before about 1965 are smaller in the ribcage than an equivalent modern dress would be, and shoulders and sleeves are often narrower.
And I find it’s not so much that people wore things to death, but that they just didn’t keep some things. Why people kept the things they kept also matters a lot.
When I buy vintage directly from the original owners, there’s a pattern I often see. People keep the things that have sentimental value, which tend to be from the early part of their lives. They keep their prom dress, their honeymoon trousseau, the suit they wore to their first day at their first job. And because people’s bodies change over time, the things people kept are often smaller.
Sometimes I do get lucky, and I find someone who kept everything, over a period of decades. And invariably I see that the clothes from the 50s are one size, and the clothes from the 60s are a couple of sizes bigger, and the clothes from the 70s are a couple of sizes bigger... because that’s just what bodies do, over time. And most people don’t keep their everyday clothes from middle age forever, even if they’re still in good condition, so they’re not around for me to find.

Oh! I’ve done the Butterfly house! It has tighter security than the airport. We got delayed twenty minutes to return pocketknives to our hotel.
I saw that it's a FEDERAL BUILDING, which means I need to bring my passport and leave my knife at home :(:(:(:(:(
You're cute! And the best! No take backs!
*draws uno reverse card!* NO YOU!
Hello! I just wanted to say I followed you for the dogfather au updates and stayed for the awesome vintage and embroidery! I'm not always good at organizing my thoughts to give fic authors comments but I'm working on it and I want to be better.
thank you! as you may know, all fic authors are basically dragons who want to roll around on a hoard of comments all day, so that is much appreciated.
There were in character Twitter accounts that bridged the season finale with the special. Would you like a summary of them?
Thanks for the heads up, and for asking first! I think for the moment, I’ll just run with it, see how the special goes without the bridge. I may hit you guys up for it after though!
Fandom mom who is very disappointed when her anons misbehave
What is my fandom reputation?
End of year ask: what were your go to comfort shows this year, new or old favorites?
The Worst Witch (2017), GBBO (though I’m behind on the latest season), and Gilmore Girls are kind of on constant rotation. I fell back in love with Who’s the Boss? Which has been a MAJOR source of comfort. It’s getting even colder so I’ll definitely break out Anne with an E soon.
Send me an ask about my year.
