Happiest Season & Mrs. Fletcher Crossover
What if Eve invited Riley to her party after they saw the drag queen performance?
Bonus:
Oookay I think it would fun if you could do a fic where the reader has a crush on Riley and is part of same social circle as Riley and Harper so she knows what Harper did to Riley and also knows how Abby was lowkey using Riley for comfort only to go running back to Harper. So the reader is comforting Riley and telling her she deserves better but ends up confessing her feelings for Riley in the process of that and it escalates from there.
At last! What can I say, this turned out to be a pure lesbian romcom, I hope you enjoy it.

‘So my parents were so attached to me believing in Santa that, even after years went by and I stopped believing, and they knew about that, still we just kept the charade going,’ said Riley.
‘Yeah,’ the blond girl sitting next to her nodded, staring into the void.
‘They were struggling, and I just felt so bad for them—that I eventually murdered them.’
‘Sounds fun,’ Abby muttered without even looking at Riley.
‘Ahem…hello?’ Riley ran her hand in front of the girl’s eyes.
‘Sorry I just…I think I need to go—’ Abby looked confused and all over the place.
'Hey, what’s happening?’
Riley got vexed as she really was trying to cheer Abby up and be there for her, knowing that being among Harper’s family on Christmas Eve could be quite a challenge, especially if you’re taken hostage and forcefully pushed back into the closet again.
‘It’s just…I was going to propose, but now it feels like she’s a totally different person. Like with me and here with her parents and…Connor.’
‘Welcome to the club,’ Riley chuckled.
‘What happened with you by the way? Harper was vague about that.’
‘Well, in school we were really close for years, like, inseparable, and in the freshman year we became…more than friends,' Riley rolled her eyes. ‘But then her friend suspected something, and Harper freaked out and told everyone that I was like obsessed with her, and she basically outed me in front of the school, which made my life awful for a while.’
‘Fuck, I’m sorry, I didn’t know that…’ Abby was genuinely shocked right now, discovering another layers of her girlfriend’s past.
‘It’s alright, it was a long time ago,’ Riley shrugged and took a sip of the red wine.
‘Do you believe people change?’ Her face was almost pale with tears in her eyes, ready to burst any second.
‘Honestly, I have no idea. How about we get you a real drink?’
‘Sounds good, thanks,’ Abby said as she gave her a nod with a strained smile and continued piercing her gaze at Harper, who was talking enthusiastically with Connor near the Christmas tree.
***
As she walked over to the bar to fetch drinks, you finally saw her up close. Riley was at arm's length and looking stunning as always. You'd wanted to talk to her for quite a long time, but it hadn't been easy since she'd been chatting with Abby furtively in the corner of the room all evening; besides, there was a bunch of people here, mostly former classmates with their families, who were eager to know everything that had happened in your life while you'd been out of town. By and large, everything that was going on at this posh party seemed bizarre and uneasy, and there was some kind of lesbian drama in the air.
You left this town first thing after graduating, and normally spent Christmas with your friends in New York, but this time decided to visit just to check up on your old parents. You didn’t have the best relationship with them, especially after your awkward coming out, but it was actually good to be there for Christmas, get lost in a crowd of familiar faces and some childhood memories. Plus, someone in a group chat said Riley would be there. You came across her post on insta and thought that…It’s probably stupid, but this Christmas you were free like a river and lonely as a wolf, so why not take a chance?
Seeing those people conjured up high school memories, especially the year Harper outed Riley in front of the students. It had been horrible, to say the least, and suddenly you remembered it so clearly, as if it had happened yesterday. You wanted to stand up for Riley then, but unfortunately you didn't have the guts to do so in those days, and you were still processing your own sexuality. Given what you saw happening to gay people at school, it goes without saying that you were shit scared of those bullies. Whatever the case, you did your best to show Riley that you were on her side and never made fun of her. Still, being a shy little person, basically a wallflower, you probably didn't get her attention, so she was unlikely to remember you.
She was now a few inches away, and the scent of her sandalwood perfume hit you hard, provoking a faint panic attack inside you.
‘Hey, Riley,’ you uttered awkwardly.
‘Sorry, I’m so clumsy,’ she said, trying not to spill the drinks, ‘hi!’ She bestowed her perfect smile upon you.
‘It’s Y/N, from a freshman year, you probably don’t remember.’
‘Of course I do! It’s been a while since you’ve visited this godforsaken place, right?’ Riley said.
‘It’s actually cute there. I mean…almost poetic pastoral, isn’t it?’ You faintly chuckled, giving her a subtle flirtatious look.
‘Yeah, I know, just fooling around. Can you believe they are still doing that ‘white elephant’ thing?’
‘I think I missed that stuff. Living in New York, you know…’
‘Oh yeah, that explains a lot,’ she playfully pouted and shook her head exaggeratedly.
‘Well, I guess being here on Christmas, kinda comes with the territory,’ you said.
‘When in Rome…’ she smirked.
‘Do what Caldwells do.’ Then you both laughed, still figuring out the mood of this small talk.
You blushed in a second, as you saw her laughing at your jokes. How could she be so gorgeous all the time? Years later, it only got hotter—a sexy brunette with sharp eyes and a deadpan expression. You could barely pull yourself together and put words in sentences, but on the outside you seemed to be nailing it.
‘Sorry, I should—’ she pointed to the lounge as she had beed expected by someone.
‘Oh, I didn’t mean to distract you,’ you briefly apologized with a dash of disappointment on your face.
‘It’s fine, it’s just…’
She glanced back again and realized that Abby was suddenly gone.
‘Hm,’ she looked a bit lost.
‘Everything alright?’
‘Actually, I think I need a breather. Do you mind?’ Riley tilted her head pointing at the front door.
'Absolutely not!’ You tried your best not to show your childish excitement.
Looked like the party had just started.
***
You both snuck through the crowd and went outside of the house. It was cold, but the fluffy snow lying softly on the porch surface and the Christmas decorations of the Caldwell's upscale home with warm lights, wreaths and mistletoe made it look like some Hallmark fantasy. But you couldn’t take your eyes off Riley’s beautiful features and her perfect curled strands, slightly blowing in the wind.
‘Sorry if it's none of my business, but Abby and Harper?’ You finally brought up the elephant in the room.
‘Hm?’ Riley looked a bit puzzled.
'I mean, something is obviously off. Harper is still in the closet, isn’t she?’
Riley was probably figuring out if she was supposed to gossip about them.
‘Yeah, she surely is.’
‘Frankly, I don’t care about what’s going on with Harper, it’s just…I’m so sorry about what happened back in school.’
‘That’s okay, it doesn’t matter now,’ she stuttered.
‘It does matter, Riley. What she did was unforgivable. Period.’
‘You think so?’ She looked at you rather carefully and surprized.
'I’m sure there were ways to get out of that situation, but she chose to betray you. And…I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you. It frightened me so much, that I was sitting in my own closet until graduation,’ you said, realizing that you had just come out in front of Riley.
‘Oh, so you’re…’ Riley’s face broke into a sincere smile.
‘I’m gay, that’s right,’ you chuckled with a relief, ‘and watching you confronted everyone helped me accept myself earlier, so thank you for that.’
‘Basically I was forced, but you’re welcome,’ she chuckled, ‘besides, it was enough not to be bullied by at least one normal person there.’
‘And as I said,’ Riley added, ‘it doesn’t matter now. Honestly, that made me even stronger, so I should probably thank Harper for that.’
You felt the blood boiling in your veins. No way Harper will benefit from her own shit. Of course, you knew what Riley meant, but nevertheless, you felt jealous.
Suddenly, you heard some screams and sounds of breaking and instinctively ran inside the house.
***
‘Harper is a lesbian!’ Sloan shrieked, adjusting her messy hair. Seemed like you had almost missed a once-in-a-lifetime Caldwells performance.
For a while, there was a total silence that heavily hung in the living room, stealing everybody’s breath.
‘She’s…she’s lying!’ Harper screamed, looking embarrassed, though all you could feel now was rage. You looked sideways at Riley, and her face spoke for herself.
As you said, people less likely to change. Especially Caldwell people.
Guests started to leave and you briefly took your coat and were standing in the doorway, waiting for Riley to join you; but she walked up to Harper as if to say something in private.
***
‘Great party,’ Riley grinned gazing at Harper, standing alone in the middle of the hall. It was hard to tell whether she was sorry for what had happened, or pleased with kind of a payback for the old days. But knowing Riley, it was probably the first one.
‘Oh yeah…’ Harper mumbled sheepishly.
‘You okay?’ Riley asked softly.
‘I’m so sorry,’ she said with her reddened cheeks.
Riley looked right through her eyes and suddenly put her hand out to shake.
‘She’s a really good one,’ she pursed her lips and nodded her head in Abby's direction who was standing not far away with her friend. Harper was trying hard not to burst into tears.
Riley said goodbye to other members of the Caldwell family and approached the doorway; you handed her a coat and finally you both left the house. Yet you felt that something was odd.
***
‘Is everything fine?’ you cleared your throat, breaking the silence as you walked toward the main road.
‘Yeah,’ she sighed, ‘maybe just some flashbacks or whatever.’
‘I can imagine. She’s such a coward.’
‘Well, that’s her family. She couldn’t have it any other way,’ Riley seemed to defend Harper, and you had been trying your hardest not to rant and rave.
‘I don’t know,’ you let out a loud sigh.
‘What?’
‘Am I supposed to react the way I want?’
'Yes, Y/N, you’ve been thinking too loud,’ she chuckled.
‘Okay. I get it, it’s hard to be out to parents like hers, but why the hell inviting your girlfriend to the family party, where you’d need to hide her from everyone? I think Harper’s an asshole, let alone she never said sorry to you after what happened. But you are so kind to her, feeling sorry for her even now…I mean, you must have been really in love with her. Like really—’
‘Hey that’s sweet. Thank you, Y/N,’ she gazed at you as you were walking down the road under the falling snow. ‘I guess, I left that school stuff behind and buried it deep down, trying not to think about it for a hell of a lot of time. But now it was like it triggered something.’
‘Don’t you feel angry?’
‘Somehow I don’t. Maybe seeing her so broken made it even. Or maybe I just know her family too much to judge. I’m lucky my parents love and accept me, it’s a privilege, you know. That’s why I forgave Harper long ago.'
‘Anyway, I wish I kicked her ass back then at school!’ you still couldn’t let it go being emotional.
‘That’s cute!’ she laughed, ‘I’ve never been fought over before!’
‘I’m fucking serious. You have a big heart, Riley. You deserve to be with someone who shouts their love for you from the rooftops,’ you blurted it out.
Riley giggled but remained silent, only the slight blush on her cheeks giving her away.
‘Do you wanna go somewhere, like to grab a drink or whatever? My folks are gonna sleep early, so I’m totally free,’ you said trying not to make it too obvious that you were hitting on her all evening. But probably it was a little too late for that.
‘I thought you’d never ask,’ Riley smirked and took you under her arm. The proximity sent waves of warmth and shivers to your body, and you couldn’t help but grinned as if you were in high school again and you’d just asked her out.
‘There’s one tiny problem,’ you said, ‘I don’t know any decent places in this town.’
Riley just laughed and said: ‘Leave it to me, baby.’ And that baby immediately turned you on.
***
A guy with rainbow makeup in a sparkling silver jacket opened the door, welcoming you to a local queer bar. There was a Christmas drag show, and lots of people were standing close to the scene, but gladly there were a couple of free tables. Riley ushered you to one of them, and in a minute, the rainbow host fetched you two glasses of champagne.
‘Compliments from a bar, Merry Christmas, darlings!’ he said in a high-pitched voice and disappeared into a dimly lit space with a haze of rainbow-lit light.
The music was loud and you needed some time to adjust to the atmosphere; Drag Queens were singing Christmas carols alternating with Lady Gaga songs, and everything was a far cry from the previous ‘party’, so it took just a few moments to forget about what happened before and to switch to a cheerful mood.
One of the queens approached your table and handed to you a glitter eyeshadow in a tiny box:
‘Everyone’s slaying today, don’t be shy, lovebirds!’ she said.
You looked down, nervously giggling, but Riley took the glitter without hesitation and gazed at you.
‘Want some?’
You shrugged and leaned over her, but the table was wide and Riley quickly moved to your side.
‘Close your eyes,’ she was bossing you around.
In a moment, you felt her delicate fingers touching your face, covering it with soft glitter. She was so close to you, that you could feel her fragrance and her breath on your face—it gave you a huge vertigo; not to mention that she was cool with the queen calling you lovebirds. Perhaps it was silly, but you got the impression that maybe she wouldn’t mind.
‘You’re so beautiful,’ she said, observing her artwork on your face.
‘So do you.’
‘Not yet! I need you to help me with this as well,’ she said, closing her eyes and preparing her face for a makeover.
‘Eyelids?’
‘Wherever you want, I trust you.’
It was an amazing opportunity to legally study her face and touch her skin. Luckily, she didn't know about your crush on her, which had escalated to oblivion over the day.
She opened her eyes as you finished—silver sparkles were glowing on her skin, paving the way from her eyelids to her temples.
‘You look fabulous, Riley,’ you gasped, ‘do you mind?’ You took your phone to take a selfie.
‘Definitely not!’ she responded, ‘I need evidence that we’re slaying anyway.’
She pressed her face against yours while looking at the camera, and at this point, you were calculating your moves, trying to tread carefully so as not to spook her.
‘I’m so glad I bumped into you, Y/N, and that you happened to be in town this Christmas.’
‘Oh, the pleasure is all mine,’ you couldn’t believe that you were actually on a date with her, and something told you that this was the perfect moment to reveal the cards.
‘You know,’ you muttered, ‘I’ve been dreaming of meeting you this holiday, to be honest.’
‘Really?’
You took a little pause.
Was it the vibe of this bar or the Christmassy mood or champagne or whatever, you suddenly felt brave enough to caress her cheek, slowly moving your hand to twist her hair around your fingers.
Riley just smirked, gazing at you up and down, teasingly sliding her tongue along the inside of her mouth. You’ve taken your shot, but still were a bit uncertain about her feelings and too scared to say a word right now.
No words needed, in a while you felt her body respond as she leaned in and pressed her lips against yours. You swiftly cradled her face and returned a long, passionate kiss, cherishing the precious moment. Riley grasped your wrists softly, caressing them, while deepening the kiss, sending twists to your core. At last, you broke away to gaze into each other's eyes.
The glitter smeared all over your faces, with some landing on your eyelashes, creating a shimmering blur when you looked at Riley's face. She kissed you on the lips a few more times and said:
‘Dance with me.’
She stood up and took your hand, and in the blink of an eye you were on the dance floor. ‘Closer’ by Tegan and Sara was coming from the speakers, and Riley was seductively singing along, staring at you with her big brown eyes:
All I wanna get is, a little bit closer
All I wanna know is, can you come a little closer
She waved you over with her hand, swayed her hips to the beat, and flipped her hair to the other side. You were utterly spellbound by her moves, and her lips drew you in like a magnet.
So let’s make things physical
I won’t treat you like you’re oh so typical
On impulse, you put your hands on her hips, pressing against her body, merging with Riley in a hungry kiss as if you were doing it for the first time; and then she smiled and kissed you again and again and again, and you just couldn't get enough of her, bewildered like a teen at the queer prom, dancing with the homecoming queen.
‘You’re such a good kisser, baby,’ Riley whispered closely to your ear, so you could hear her through the loud beats of the music.
‘And you’re such a good dancer, hot stuff,’ you took hold of her waist, so she was just a hair’s breadth away, her perfume intertwining with yours.
Finally the song was over, but you were still standing in the middle of the room, kissing under the disco ball reflecting iridescent colors. She wrapped her arms around you, running her fingers through your hair and giving you a beckoning smile, and you felt like the happiest person in the whole world at what was truly the happiest season.

— summary: Throughout your childhood you were inseparable from Harper and Riley. Yet, after Harper and Riley’s messy breakup and university, you found that you lost contact with the two girls who were your lifeline. That is, until you’re invited back to your hometown to celebrate Christmas with Harper’s family.

— a/n: anon, this one is for you. chat i love writing christmas stories.
You were never fond of Christmas. While the season brought cheerful lights and shades of red and green, you often found that it also dug up stress as well. The very stress that had sent you into the nearest dress shop on Christmas Eve. Letting out a small sigh, you ran your fingers along the endless racks of dresses, attempting to find one suitable for Caldwells’ annual Christmas Eve party. While you weren’t the type to want to impress people, there was something about Harper’s family that made you feel like you had to go out of your way to not be judged.
“Well I’ll be damned.”
The words come from behind you, trailing from the lips of someone you had longed for in your past. Instantly your head shot up from the dress you were eyeing, leaving you to turn your body towards the voice.
“Riley!” you gasped, quickly throwing your arms around the brunette that stood before you.
Caught off guard from your embrace, a surprised chuckle left Riley’s throat as she wrapped her arms around your waist. She was dressed in a silk blue blouse that remained partly revealed under a black blazer. The fabric of her dress pants brushed against your tights as you slowly pulled away to look up at her face. She was just as beautiful as you remembered her to be.
“Miss me?” Riley laughed, scrunching her nose.
“Of course,” you replied through your grin. “I thought you moved to New York?”
Riley shrugged off the question as she released her grip upon you.
“It didn’t work out.”
Your grin faltered slightly as you took a second to study Riley’s expression. Last you heard, she had gotten married to a journalist from the big apple, but the absence of a wedding ring made you question that notion.
“Oh I’m sorry…” you hesitated, quickly earning a small head shake from Riley.
“No it’s fine, don’t worry. I’m fine diagnosing everyone’s problems here.” she insisted, leaving room for her usual sarcasm in her words.
It earned a small giggle from your lips.
“So what brings you to town? I thought your parents moved to South Carolina to escape the cold.” Riley asked, tilting her head.
“Harper invited me to her family’s Christmas Eve party.”
“You willingly want to go to that?”
The question caused you to hesitate for a moment. You knew exactly the reason why you came, it was standing right in front of you. Yet, you couldn’t let her know that, not after the years of no contact.
“Kinda. It’s been a while since I’ve seen everyone. I missed you guys.”
Riley remained silent for a moment before shifting her attention towards the dresses behind you.
“Well, if that’s the case, you need something a little more eye-catching to wear.” she hummed, taking a step forward to begin looking through the racks.
Standing shyly to the side, you watched quietly as Riley occasionally glanced over at your body, attempting to decipher what shade she wanted to dress you in. Eventually, she lingered upon a scarlet velvet dress that fell off the shoulders. Raising a brow, Riley plucked it from the rack before holding it up to you.
“I don’t know if I can pull that off.” you stated, throwing your hands up defensively.
“Oh please, you can make any dress look stunning.” Riley reassured, before thrusting the dress into your arms.
Reaching for your waist, she began to guide you towards the fitting rooms. After finding the nearest empty room, she nudged you inside.
“Now change.”
Letting out a small sigh, you took a moment to stare at the mirror beside you. Unmistakably, your reflection’s cheeks held a soft dusting of red upon them, no doubt from the compliments Riley had showered you in. Memories flooded through your mind like an old kinetoscope, showing glimpses of quiet moments of Riley and yourself. The moment she had told you that her and Harper had started dating still caused your stomach to twist into a pit. Shaking off the thought, you turned your attention to the dress once more before beginning to strip yourself of your winter clothes. The air felt cold against your bare back, making you wonder what kind of store would have the air conditioning on during the winter months. Reaching for the dress, you slipped it on with ease. The velvet felt soft against your skin as you turned back towards the mirror. Your eyes widened at the sight.
Riley certainly knew how to pick the perfect dress.
Reaching behind your back, you fiddled for the zipper desperately. You managed to zip it up to the center of your spine before realizing that you’d need assistance.
“Riley?”
“Mhm?”
Riley’s voice came from right outside the fitting room. You sighed softly in relief as you carefully unlocked the door.
“Could you help me zip this?”
“Yeah, give me a–” Riley began, only for her words to stop as she opened the door.
Her eyes lingered upon the sight of you in the dress, taking in every inch that the velvet touched.
“Holy shit.” she murmured, causing your cheeks to burn.
“Does it look okay?” you asked hesitantly as she took a step closer towards you.
Turning around, you exposed the zipper to her. As her fingers glided to your back, you felt her knuckles graze your skin as she zipped the dress up.
“Are you kidding? It looks beautiful on you.”
“Thank you…”
You watched in the mirror’s reflection as Riley's hands remained upon your back for a moment, before slowly moving towards your shoulders. Gently giving them a squeeze, her eyes flicker to the reflection as well. Mentally you cursed the fact that there was no way you were able to hide your blush.
“You’re a little red, babe.” she teased, pressing her chin against your shoulder.
“It’s just really warm in here.”
“Uh huh.”
God you had missed her touch. The scent of her cinnamon vanilla perfume surrounded you as you began to melt against Riley. Lost in the moment, the feeling of the price tag against your thigh brought you back to reality. Carefully reaching for it, you tugged the small piece of paper upwards in order to read the cursive price printed upon it.
“On second thought it’s not that pretty.” you gasped, quickly dropping the price tag.
Raising a brow at your words, a frown formed upon Riley’s lips as she tilted her head.
“What do you mean?”
“They want three hundred for it. I could barely budget my plane ticket here.”
Reaching for the tag, Riley let go off your shoulders before studying the printed price. Refusing to look up at you, she tugged at the tag until it pulled from the dress, causing you to gasp.
“Riley? What are you doing?” you asked, turning around to face her.
“Giving you your Christmas present early.” Riley replied simply, stepping out of the fitting room before you could grab onto her.
Letting out a frustrated sigh, you quickly reach for the zipper behind your back in a desperate attempt to free yourself from the dress.
You failed miserably.
A groan slipped from your lips as you plopped onto the circular seat in the corner of the fitting room. After waiting for what felt like forever, Riley returned with a receipt in hand.
“Riley, you didn’t have to do that.” you protested quietly, pouting as you rested your chin in her hands.
Shrugging innocently, Riley held out her hand to you. “I wanted to.”
Staring at her hand for a moment, it didn’t take you long to grab onto it. Standing up, you intertwined your arm with Riley as the two of you began to walk out the store. It didn’t make any sense to change, after all the party was merely hours away.
“Why?”
“Because…”
“Because…?”
“Because.”
Her words made a giggle escape your lips as the two of you stepped into the snowy streets of Pittsburgh. The frosty breeze nipped at your skin, causing you to push yourself further against Riley as you walked. A faint smile tugged at Riley’s lips as she kept you close beside her.
“Want to take my car? We can stay at my place until it’s time for the party.” Riley asked, raising a brow.
“Please.” you replied, ignoring the chattering of your teeth from the cold.
Hurrying over to Riley’s silver SUV, you watched as she tugged open the passenger door for you, before guiding you inside. Her car was everything you’d imagine it to be, neatly organized with a beaded air freshener dangling from her mirror. As she slid into her driver’s seat, the car’s engine roared to life.
“You know those are illegal right? You can get pulled over for having stuff on your mirror.” you teased, pointing at her air freshener.
“What are you a snitch?” she shot back, laughing softly at your remark.
“Maybe. A criminal doctor sounds pretty dangerous.”
“Ooh, watch out now.”
Meeting each other’s gaze, the two of you erupted in laughter as Riley began to drive to her house on the East side of the city. The car ride was filled with aimless chatter, the two of you catching up on old high school drama that no longer concerned either of you. Harper was brought up as well, very faintly as you recalled seeing her new girlfriend Abby.
“Think they’ll last?” you asked, curiously, raising a brow as Riley pulled into her driveway.
Her house was bigger than you expected.
Sighing softly, Riley set the SUV into park before running a hand through her chocolate colored hair.
“Not if Harper doesn’t accept herself.”
The words held a crucial amount of weight as the two of you hopped out of the vehicle. You couldn’t imagine the pain Riley had gone through. You were there when it happened of course, but it was almost a little too grimacing to look back on. Harper had managed to turn everyone against Riley, leaving only you to stick at her side. Part of you wondered if Abby would suffer a similar fate. Ignoring the thought, you followed Riley up the front steps to her home. Her window revealed a large Christmas tree, dimly lit with an absence of decorations.
“What’s with the sad looking tree?” you asked curiously, nodding your head towards the sight as Riley twisted open the door.
Raising a brow, Riley pushed the door open before following your gaze.
“Haven’t had the time. The clinic has been insane with everyone and their mother thinking they’ve the flu.” Riley sighed.
“Those common colds can be pretty risky.” you snickered, earning a small smirk from Riley.
“Get in here.”
‧˚₊•┈┈┈┈୨୧┈┈┈┈•‧₊˚⊹
“You’re going to drop me.”
“No I’m not! I swear.”
Riley’s arms wrapped around your waist firmly as she raised up into the air. Holding your breath, you held a Christmas tree star tightly in your hands in an effort to add a finishing touch to the now decorated tree. Swaying slightly, you felt your heart rate quicken as Riley regained her footing.
“This is how I go, at the hands of a doctor.” you whined, reaching out to place the star upon the top of the tree.
It shimmered against the light as your response earned a playfully squeeze upon your waist.
“Hey!” you gasped, as Riley’s laughter surrounded you.
Setting you back on the ground, Riley’s hands lingered upon your waist as she caught her breath. There was a new found softness within her gaze as she pulled you closer.
“That wouldn’t be such a bad way to go, would it?” she hummed.
You stumbled slightly against her while your cheeks burned a soft shade of red. Pressing against her body, the two of you managed to lose your footing. Falling against the tan sofa behind you, you land upon Riley’s lap. Her eyes widened for a moment and you noticed the faintest blush creeping onto her cheeks. Your own face mirrored the same image. Keeping her arms wrapped around your waist, Riley smiled gently up at you before hesitating.
“Do you really want to go to Harper’s party?” she asked, her question quiet.
Tilting your head, you hesitated before draping your arms loosely around Riley’s neck.
“What would we do instead? You know she’d flip if we didn’t go.”
“I don’t care about what she thinks.”
“You’ve made that quite apparent m’lady.”
Riley chuckled at your words before reaching up to tuck a loose strand behind your ear. A storm of butterflies fluttered within your stomach as you leaned into her touch.
“I’m glad you came home.” Riley whispered softly, a genuine flicker within her eyes.
Your words leave your lips before you could even think of stopping them.
“You are my home.”
Riley’s eyes widened at your words and you quickly bit the inside of your cheek in horror.
“I’m so sorry I shouldn’t have sai–”
Before you could finish, Riley’s hands reached for your face to gently tug you into a soft kiss. Her lips tasted like peppermint, like the holiday chapstick collections you could buy only at Christmas time. Yet, there was more than just that. She tasted like home, no matter what the season was. Pulling away for a moment, Riley rested her forehead against yours as the Christmas tree’s lights brought a warm hue to her hair.
“You’re my home too.”
and they weren’t roommates…

your first holiday party out as a couple. requested by @yjsteamwife <3
“It’s beautiful,” Riley smiles, hands falling to your waist as she looks over your shoulder and into the mirror in front of you. Her eyes land on your new necklace, one she bought for you to wear before the party and gave to you just before leaving the house. She examines it with you now for the thousandth time in the event’s lavish restroom. “I knew it would look incredible on you.”
“I love it,” you say softly, reaching up to touch the jewelry. It looks expensive, Riley must have spent a fortune on it, all to wear to the yearly Christmas party hosted by some of the wealthier local families — hers included. “You didn’t have to…”
“I did,” she corrects. With a hand on your shoulder she turns you to face her. “You know this year is special.”
It’s special because it’s the first year you and Riley have been going out publicly as a couple. This is the first holiday party you’re attending as a pair, and the biggest event of the year at that. The event with the best decor, wreaths covering the whole place and Christmas trees packed into every corner, music blasting through built-in wall speakers and appetizer tables that could feed armies.
You know Riley has struggled publicly when it comes to her sexuality — you know she has been tormented and ousted for it, that picking up a high level career and living silently has been the only way she has been able to gain any sort of peace since she was outed years ago. So you know how much it affects her — what courage it takes — when she takes your hand now and leads you back out into the party.
You know, too, how much it affects her when right upon stepping out you run into Harper.
Riley never told you much about her ex-girlfriend, but she told you enough that you feel the same sting when you’re faced with her and you remember the stories of everything Harper did to disguise herself. The consequences of her actions haven’t faded.
“Riley,” Harper breathes, clinging to the woman beside her — running for lesbian of the year if you had to guess, another girlfriend that hopefully she’ll have better luck with this time — and watching you two in horror.
“You’re back in town,” Riley says coolly, gaze flicking over to you quickly before going back to her. “It’s good to see you. Is this your…”
“Friend,” claims the woman beside Harper — and she says it too quickly, she nods too hard, she won’t meet your eyes or Riley’s. “Best friend. Roommate. We’re just roommates, but not in the ‘they were roommates’ sense, we just live together and—”
“Right,” Riley nods. Her tone is level, but you see the tension in the way she stands, head held high and hand grabbing for yours. “Sure, that makes sense.”
“Yeah, I guess I’m just saying… no homo?”
“Well, it was great seeing you again,” Harper says quickly, and before you can respond she’s already pulling the other woman with her into the restroom behind you.
You stand there for a second with Riley, dumbfounded and trying to process the encounter, which is proving to be one of the more awkward moments you’ve experienced in the past few months.
Riley clears her throat beside you. “That was…”
“Definitely homo?”
This manages to make her smile. You see some of the tension in her dissipate. Her grip on your hand becomes more relaxed, more for the sake of love instead of the sake of security. “To say the least. Want a drink?”
With Riley’s hand still holding yours, you go to the bar and get some drinks. She pays — she always volunteers to, and tonight you let her, because this is more of a milestone for her than for you and you want to give her the sense of confidence she wants in doing something for you. Even the smallest public gesture like buying you a drink becomes monumental when you remember that to her it’s the first time doing it openly as yours in front of her family. It’s her first time standing at another woman’s side, kissing another woman’s cheek, holding another woman’s hand in front of everyone that has been so influential in her life since the beginning.
You notice that you don’t see her parents anywhere in the crowd. Your chest aches, you try to reckon with the fact that it’s probably for the best.
Riley hands you your drink. “You okay?”
You nod, gazing out at the crowd.
“Are you sure?”
You hesitate, turning back to her. “Are you sure about this?”
“About what?”
“This,” you gesture around. “Coming out. Coming here. With me. I just mean that if this doesn’t last, if we ever break up or—”
“I don’t plan on ever breaking up with you,” Riley interrupts.
“I know. But humor me.”
Riley steps forward, meeting your eyes. You’re so close to her that already your anxiety is beginning to dissipate, you can smell the richness of her perfume even beneath the strong scent of Christmas peppermint wafting through the air.
“Listen to me,” Riley instructs, voice warm. “As much as I love you, this isn’t just for you. I need this. I need to be… proud of myself. It’s about time, I’m not getting any younger.”
“You should be proud.”
“I’m trying,” she smiles. “This is another step towards that. So enjoy tonight and let me show you off.”
“You think you’re quite the package showing off your younger girlfriend?”
She pretends to consider it before nodding. “I hadn’t thought about it that way, but sure.”
You scan the crowd, identifying your first few victims of holiday greetings. “Let’s go make the rounds, then.”
