Rinzen, 1993, installation
Rinzen – a Japanese word meaning a ‘sudden awakening’ – is one of Tàpies’ most significant works. Designed for the Spanish Pavilion at the XLV Venice Biennale of 1993 and won the Golden Lion for this event. Six years later, in 1998, Tàpies installed the work permanently in the MACBA, the Contemporary Art Museum of Barcelona.
Lately, some mighty dapper official remixes of disco dance legend Giorgio Moroder’s saucy groover Good For Me have been floating about. They run the gauntlet when it comes to electronic music styles. I can’t help but be drawn into the deep rumbling, guttural whomping bass on Rinzen’s remix. This is a smoldering deep house edit on which Karen Harding seems to ignite with extra ferocity. Anyone else feel like they can dance entranced all night to Rinzen’s dark and steamy edit? Hours could pass and I wouldn’t even know it.
