Imagine being a reader back in ancient times. Like, even back in the 1800s. You love to read and learn and you don’t have access to all the books you can imagine. You have to reread books that you already have. When personal libraries tend to be small. When you have to be rich to own 20 or more books. Imagine hearing about a book from someone else and not being able to just go purchase it from the local bookstore because it’s not a classic. You can’t buy it off the internet because the internet doesn’t even exist yet. You have to wait to read it until your friend is done with it, or write to your relative that lives in the city to send a copy to you. Imagine that you don’t have the privilege of being a picky reader because books are so expensive and difficult to obtain. The most popular books are the Iliad, the Bible, Pilgrim’s Progress, and Dante’s Inferno so you’ve basically memorized those stories because you just want to read! Lord of the Rings, Oliver Twist, Pride and Prejudice, Moby Dick, Grimm’s Faery Tales, etc haven’t even been written yet. Being a reader at that time must have been so miserable!
