Alice Photos
Very very excited to share some cool stuff today! My best friend recently went to the Georgia Aquarium and got me some GREAT whale shark pics (as usual). Her Twitter is @DolphinExtract.
For now I will show you guys some pictures of Alice. You’ll see that she really is the Queen of the Freckles, and that her tail definitely has some sort of rough past.
Here’s the first belly shot of Alice!
She doesn’t just have freckles.
She has all the freckles.
As you can see, she is definitely the easiest whale shark to ID (besides Yushan, anyways). Check out those freckles! She also has that very prominent barnacle on her right pectoral fin.
And don’t even get me started on her tail.
It is torn up beyond belief! This side of it is the worst, but the other side is also a bit shredded. Alice has this awful tail, and Yushan has a scar on his belly and a scoop missing from his dorsal. All of these injuries happened pre-Aquarium. The wild can be a crazy place, after all.
Between her tail and freckles, Alice is very easy to identify. When IDing whale sharks, the first options you should rule out are Alice and Yushan. Large female, tons of belly freckles, and a tail that looks like it survived an encounter with a garbage disposal? Alice! Small, noticeably male, with a fin that leans significantly to the right? Yushan! Taroko and Trixie can be trickier to tell apart, but I will get to that in later posts. :)
I hope you all enjoyed getting to know Alice a bit better.
