Reposted from @keithboykin Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a teacher turned pastor who fought against apartheid, won the Nobel Peace Prize, chaired South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. He did all this while maintaining his sense of humor, humility, grace and dignity. I have admired Bishop Tutu since I was a college student years ago, and I have written about him several times in the past. But Archbishop Tutu was not only a fighter for racial justice. He was also an advocate for LGBTQ inclusion and an early supporter of marriage equality. “If God is homophobic,” he said, “I wouldn’t worship that God.” Tutu was a relentless freedom fighter, and yet he was one of the most gentle and loving human beings I’ve ever encountered on the planet. Born October 7, 1931 in South Africa, Archbishop Tutu died an international hero on December 26, 2021. May he rest in power. ✊🏾 #ripdesmondtutu #desmondtutu #archbishopdesmondtutu #southafrica #nelsonmandela #apartheid #homophobia https://www.instagram.com/p/CX9SNrTKcwS/?utm_medium=tumblr
