RIPOSTE IS GROWING DESPERATE. ALMOST TWO months have passed since she became a fugitive—from her school, her father, her country—and she's yet to turn up a single lead. if the situation that brought her here hadn't been her biggest failure, this would be it. so she decided to switch tactics.
this is a strange new place, but she's gotten her bearings quick enough. there is the matter of money: she can only afford to stay in her lodgings for a few more weeks at most. but for the first time in riposte's life, the most practical option—looking for a job to hold her down—is the one she least wants to pursue.
instead, she finds herself here, swordfighting a demon in an alleyway. go figure.
the experimental summoning ritual went very wrong. very, very wrong. the creature has her on the back foot, despite her quick and deadly movements as she lands fatal strike after fatal strike. riposte is not used to fighting beings of this caliber without jupiter's arcane support. her battle maneuvers are meant to be used by one half of a pair, leaving tactical openings for spells that never come. she feints to the side and waits a little too long; an infernal knee plunges into her sternum, sending her stumbling backward. now is when jupiter would lunge in and cover her with a close-range blasting spell, allowing her time to recover and blink behind their opponent for some kind of incapacitating blow.
but he doesn't cover her, because he's gone.
instead, the demon takes its narrow opportunity to finally pin down its very mobile opponent, clawed arms shoving her to the ground and maw opening wide as it prepares to bite. it is this image that serenity happens upon — perhaps after following the flashes of light and sounds of a violent scuffle, or perhaps by chance.
