im just gonna say it: not surprised the dude who thought he was smart saying that “the jedi turned a bunch of clones into real people while the empire turned a bunch of real people into clones” can’t make a good clone centered series

thinking about the inaccessibility of ancestral lineage for the clones and how that would affect their construction of culture and family ties...

like... jango is the genetic donor of the clones. the “prime.” all clones are created from his genetic material. (typically, this genetic material is purposely modified to some degree. there are variations of course, ranging from boba not being altered whatsoever, to experimental or defective clones who might struggle to look at jango and see the resemblance.) the clones originate from jango, but the genetic resemblance is more that of an identical sibling. but jango isn’t a brother at all, he’s more like a father, but he’s not necessarily a father. there are few who can really say that jango is a father and mean it. fewer still can say it and have it be true. with the exception of boba, that relationship just isn’t there. though he’s the clones’ progenitor all the same.

what about the ancestors in jango’s lineage? are they also the clones’ ancestors, or are they just the ancestors of the man they were cloned from? and what of jango’s culture or ethnicity? do the clones inherit mandalorian-ess or merely the the appearance of a man who was a mandalorian? plenty of factors must influence an individual clone’s sense of identity (or lack thereof) as a mandalorian (despite not technically being a mandalorian warrior) such as knowledge of mando’a, the identity of their trainers, etc. while certain clones feel a sense of alienation to the identity, the fact that others do foster a connection to -- and knowledge of -- mandalorian culture means that clone culture as a whole is infused with words, symbols, values, etc that are drawn from the culture.

(there are mandalorians don’t see the clones as mandalorian. to some, it’s simply an issue of not meeting the requirements. to others, there’s a tactical advantage to denying any connection. there are also mandalorians who do see the clones as mandalorian (or as potentially mandalorian, or, yet again, as mandalorian in the ways that matter most) and are appalled by what the republic is doing to their kin -- it’s an idea that i like: that there are mandalorians the clones know nothing about who readily consider them as part of their people.)

among the clones, every clone is a brother, but these bonds can exist in different ways and at different intensities. there’s the brothers from your batch, the ones you grew up alongside of. there’s the brothers who are in positions of authority. there’s something parental to their brotherhood, and often there’s something hidden behind the weight of their responsibilities. there are the brothers who are your best friends. the brothers who annoys you but are still (begrudgingly) brothers all the same. there are the many, many brothers you don’t know but could know. 

and then when some of clones have children (whether adopted or biological) how is the unique culture that’s been generated by the clones going to be passed down to those children? how will they label that heritage and legacy? how will these children, these descendants, connect/relate to each other and continue to generate culture and meaning?

hey!!! given the current state of star wars canon, i wanted to make a little announcement as to what you’ll find (and won’t) on my blog.

as before, this is a general interest star wars blog, though i lean more towards the prequels, tcw, and the mandalorian. however, i’m not going to watch tbb series and will avoid reblogging fan content that is directly based off of it. tags specific to discussions of the show include: #bad batch series angst, #TBB spoilers, and #unwhitewashTBB (for more information on the hashtag, please view @/clonehub’s carrd).

what i’m most interested in doing right now (and will be prioritizing) is creating content for my own personalized star wars continuity. my tags for this will be #my star wars now and #my bad batch now (i’ll also be going through my older post to tag them accordingly).

one of the things i’m planning with tech in my rewrite is to really play with (and ultimately deconstruct) the genius/savant archetype. the entire trope is based on two things: the idea that “smart” is a personality trait and the exaggeration of neurodivergence. and like... that’s something that had a negative impact on me growing up because yeah i did often see myself in these sorts of characters, as someone who is neurodivergent, but i also wound up trying to emulate and mimic those tropes because i valued being smart. i wanted people to view me as being smart. which was very toxic because i was limiting other areas of my personal growth or perceiving failure as a negation of who i was. so that’s something i want to project onto tech. that performance. that idea of smart as a personality trait and as the most important thing about you. which i can see tech being brought up with given the role he has in his squad.

me in feb of last year after watching tbb story reels for the first time: wow that was fun :) too bad the clone wars got cancelled, these episodes would have looked great with full graphics :(
