Flora and Sylva
This week we present some wood-engraved flora and sylva from Down the River, with text by H. E. Bates and 83 wood engravings by Agnes Miller Parker, published in London by Victor Gollancz, Ltd, in 1937.
Agnes Miller Parker was a prolific Scottish wood engraver and illustrator. She did work for Gollancz and the Welsh private press Gregynog, but she was particularly sought after by the American publisher George Macy to illustrate several publications for his Limited Editions Club imprint. H. E. Bates was an equally prolific English writer of novels, short stories, drama, essays, non-fiction, criticism, children’s books, and autobiography. Down the River is somewhat autobiographical. It is a sequel to his 1936 Gollancz book (also illustrated by Parker) Through the Woods. In the book shown here, Bates writes of two rivers from his childhood, the Ouse and the Nene, and of the many aspects of river life, both natural and human, including its flora and sylva.

Upstream from the Whitewater Centre At this time of year I’m cycling along the River Nene and around Delapre Lake a lot, sometimes daily. There are signs up at Delapre warning people not to swim but there is a huge public yearning…

All the time watching for the blue flash of a kingfisher: Busy River — the Afon Hafren (Severn) near it’s source. Looking for dippers and grey wagtails. and now calm but powerful. 220 miles further down stream —…
