his shift had just ended a few minutes ago, and he wanted nothing but to go back home and just watch some tv mindlessly, smoke a joint, maybe have a beer– oh, no. he was feeling fancy, he may actually go and buy a bottle of fizzy white wine and pretend he was a rich lady while wearing the fluffy night robe he had thrifted just last week– those three dollars had to be the best three bucks ever spent. and then he remembered why he couldn’t do exactly that the night before: fucking batteries. if only things did not need them– there had to be a way... but river had never been smart enough to somehow invent a way to have infinite batteries for everything at home. still, he tried to think about an answer on his way to radioshack, which seemed like it had just closed for the night. on top of it all.
“no, no, no–” he mumbled for himself with his hands and face on the glass doors, and that’s when he spotted mateo. he couldn’t say they were friends, but... in some way, there had to be some sort of a bond after the things they went through together. that night seemed hazy, faces, actions, places, they all came in dreams and visions, but whenever river tried to conjure up the actual moment, there was some sort of fog over the memory. and yet, it haunted him everyday, and it would haunt him for the rest of the night if he didn’t get his fucking batteries. “hey! hey– mateo– it’s mateo, right?” he called out his name and smiled as he gently tapped on the doors to get the other’s attention. “please– it’s an emergency. i promise it’s a good one. i just need one quick little thing, it won’t be more than a minute. please, i’m begging.”
