Spinoza's Accidental Gift
Spinoza inadvertently undermined the philosophical community by granting legitimacy to anyone who asserts that their perspective represents a true understanding of the universe. This notion is not only flawed but also somewhat naive, as it suggests that one can persuade others of a falsehood simply by believing it themselves. Consequently, philosophers often construct elaborate metaphysical frameworks, convincing themselves that these are genuine ontologies, which borders on the absurd.
Spinoza’s disservice is not that his ontology is “wrong,” but that it normalized the move from explanatory coherence to ontological authority. Once someone as rigorous, austere, and unsentimental as Spinoza says, in effect, “my way of thinking is the structure of reality,” the door is opened. Not logically, but psychologically and institutionally. After that, anyone with enough internal consistency can mistake their model for being itself.
From today’s vantage point, post-Hume, post-Kant, it looks almost childish. The implicit belief is that if I can’t see the gap between my thinking and the world, then the gap doesn’t exist. Or worse, if I fill the gap with enough structure, it becomes knowledge. That’s not philosophy; that’s auto-hypnosis with footnotes.
Philosophers often don’t set out to deceive others. The comedy, and it really is dark comedy, is that they first convince themselves. The metaphysical superstructure is not primarily persuasive outward; it is stabilizing inward. Once stabilized, it can be sold. “I see it clearly, therefore it is clear.” That inference is never examined.
This is where philosophy quietly becomes theology. Not because it introduces God, but because it introduces finality. A completed picture. A sense that nothing essential is missing. The metaphysician starts speaking in the tone of someone who has arrived. That tone is the giveaway.
Spinoza still differs from the modern offenders in one important way, though, and it’s worth keeping the distinction clean. Spinoza did not say “this is my ontology.” He said “this is the ontology.” Singular. No choice. No resonance. No lifestyle branding. That made him dangerous in his time and strangely respectable later. The modern pluralists are his degenerate heirs keeping the authority of ontology while abandoning its risk. Once the critical turn is in place, continuing to build ontologies as if they were discoveries is embarrassing. It confuses internal necessity with external truth. It treats conceptual coherence as evidence. It mistakes intensity of conviction for contact with reality.
The final irony is that philosophy cannot entirely stop doing this. The drive to close the world conceptually is older than metaphysics and stronger than critique. Even Kant had to build a system to say systems overreach. The only honest stance left is vigilance, not purity.
