American Abstract Artists 20th Annual Exhibition with ‘Painters Eleven’ of Canada Riverside Museum April 8 – May 20, 1956 * This is the twentieth annual exhibition of The American Abstract Artists. The two decades since 1936 have seen great changes both in the progress and acceptance of abstract art. A most significant development has been the emergence of vital art-forms in sections of the world where abstract movements were unknown twenty years ago. Modern art from the beginning has thrived on comparison, discussion, and mutual understanding. With this in mind The American Abstract Artists some years ago instituted a policy whereby groups from foreign countries might exhibit with them. Painters and sculptors from Denmark, Great Britain—and most recently (although furthest from us geographically)—the Abstract Art Club of Japan. It has been singular that Canada, our nearest neighbor, has so rarely been presented here as a cultural entity. Therefore, it is with particular gratification that the Painters Eleven of Toronto are guest artists during this twentieth anniversary. GEORGE L. K.
