chasing Geomantis larvoides through a sea of gravel, sand and thorny bushes is a lot more frustrating than you'd think for an insect that can't fly or leap around. my many foiled attempts at photographing these tiny and speedy mantises made it extra surprising when i found out they're a lot less self-aware on overcast days, which they probably see only a few of throughout their entire lives, presumably baffling them due to the lack of blistering sunlight

if you think Geomantis larvoides is a weird name, you haven't seen it move around. horrified by anything that encroaches into their personal space, these tiny mantises wriggle around sand and rocks at absurdly high speeds, although personally their movement always reminds me of a lizard or snake if it was a centimeter long. this one was distracted and allowed me to get a quick shot before wormfully disappearing
