And that’s how word of Raizen’s kingdom started getting around. 

Karakasa obake (umbrella demons - sometimes considered a subset of Tsukumogami/tool spirits - objects that acquire a “soul” usually after 100 years of use) and tanuki (transforming raccoon dogs) are two of the most well-known youkai and make appearances in numerous contemporary works. In fact, tanuki appear in a manga-only story in the early days of Yu Yu Hakusho.

As mentioned in my other fanworks, my long-time pet theory is that the monks are all different demons in human guise. I love the idea that Raizen’s kingdom is open to anyone who wants to join, so there’s a bunch of the most ordinary everyday demons. This is partly why everyone’s like OH SH** WE’RE SCREWED WHEN RAIZEN DIES AHHHHHHHHH

Planning is actually one of the first North Bound stories I plotted. I even sketched out a version in my sketchbook back when I was still drawing First Meeting last year but I couldn’t finish and post it till I completed Familiar. So every so often I’d look at it and giggle/snicker to myself like an idiot lol.

Mister Kasa is actually a last-minute in-joke cameo. His name is Riyuu and he’s an antique Buddhist monk wagasa I designed for an otome game @atorier and I worked on while we were exhibiting at Bit Bazaar. The concept was dating anthropomorphized ikemen umbrellas based on my Umbrella Dudes joke comic. (Man, all of my jokes are super convoluted…) We got as far as picking a game engine and setting up/testing basic code, designing 3 characters, scripting to the point where you decide which umbrella’s story to follow, and drawing maybe 5 backgrounds before we zoned out. He was floating around in my sketchbook, so here he is now, living a second (one-shot) life as a proselytizer in North Bound.

OKAY, SOME REAL TALK. If you follow North Bound (or any of my stories really) you already know I get stupidly obsessive about details and then give up so that things can get done. I try to at least aim for historical verisimilitude and acknowledgement if not accuracy… So here’s a fun fact: Japanese umbrellas could not fold closed during the Kamakura time period of North Bound. Didn’t happen till maybe the Muromachi or Azuchi Momoyama periods with the openable wagasa (traditional Japanese oil paper umbrellas). But it looked weird to me since kasa-obake are depicted closed. And with one eye. And a sandal. And a super long tongue. (I failed on multiple accuracy fronts obviously.) Anyways now you know! *shooting star gif*

Last but certainly not least, while I was editing these pages I discovered the squashed corpse of a tiny insect on the scans. I’M SO SORRY MISTER BUG sob...

Head canon: Riyuu likes cats and he likes to cuddle with them too. One day he finds a kitten within the castle and ends up taking care of it. The cat eventually grows up and stays with Riyuu. The cat curls up with Riyuu a lot. (Especially at night)
