#14 ; a box of letters they never had the courage to send // high school au
in high school, kim hyoyeon was always known as that bitch. the all kill — cute, popular, and smart, someone who the girls wanted to be and the boys wanted to be with.
in high school, park sunyoung was just known as a bitch. period.
an unlikely friendship soon bloomed between the two — they met sometime in detention, where when hyoyeon just mainly took note of the how long she was going to be in there, and kept to herself as she tried to survive — that was clearly disrupted by the taller brunette who kept flinging paper wads at her and smacking her gum with an obnoxious volume; words coated with amusement as she flung them towards the other — well well well, if it isn’t miss perfection. did the teacher send you here because you didn’t get a perfect score? and this place ain’t for you, blondie. i suggest you stop cutting your eyes over here unless you want me to rip them out for you.
what she wasn’t expecting was for hyoyeon to bite back just as much, if not more venom that sunyoung was expecting. the girl had spunk behind those pretty eye smiles and pleasant tones. she liked that.
somehow hyoyeon would make repeat appearances to detention — not forcibly, like how sunyoung always was — but rather voluntary, as she would stay after school to make sure that all of the boards were erased for the day ahead, but somehow she would find herself staying a bit too long in the detention room with sunyoung; where insults started to turn into compliments when then turned into life inquires, and from there they would end up talking about the most mundane of topics with each other. sunyoung didn’t really think that the blonde thought of her as a friend until they started hanging out after school, and on the weekends, and during holidays — until seeing hyoyeon was a regular thing for her. it was nice, really nice.
so nice, in fact, that she didn’t mind how her heart started to flutter anytime hyoyeon started to laugh at her stupidity, how she tried her hardest to stop the creeping blush from appearing anytime the younger girl brushed hands, fingers, feet, or any other body part against her by accident ( or not ). the fact that she started to day dream about hyoyeon’s smile when she should have been paying attention in class, or the fact that she would drop some of the most important things she was doing in order to go to hyoyeon’s side didn’t matter either, because sunyoung kept telling herself that they didn’t matter, and that it was all stupid. she was only a f r i e n d, that’s it. she was just happy that she had a really good girl friend by her side, is all.
that was also what she kept telling herself as she found herself writing things late at night, soppy little cute lovey-dovey words with hearts written in pink ink, long letters that came from her heart which would never see the light of day, so long as sunyoung said so. it was just a way to get her feelings out, so that she could repress them easier whenever she saw her face daily.
sunyoung didn’t understand why she had the box in her locker right now, waiting for the perfect moment to put it somewhere where only hyoyeon could see it, somehow. she didn’t understand why she had to do this on white day of all days, either. she didn’t understand why she payed some wimpy underclassmen to stow it away in hyoyeon’s locker when she wasn’t looking, and when it happened, she didn’t understand why she was a nervous wreck the whole day. sunyoung didn’t even have the courage to write her full name at the end of the letters — the brunette spent the entire night last night erasing ‘sunyoung’ and re-writing ‘alaska’ on the ends of the letters for a simple reason; she would know that she might have an inkling of hope if she went looking for the girl named alaska, and if she didn’t? well, they were obviously just meant as friends. no one went looking for someone just to reject them, right?
the day went on as planned, sunyoung chatting with the other as if nothing was the matter, and it wasn’t until lunch that she got something that she wasn’t expecting.
