I keep thinking about the sexism line from BS because I can't tell if it was self-aware. Like, putting a woman in that get-up, just to have a character explain how it's actually, infact, not sexist or needlessly sexualizing a random female character and reassuring randl (and by extension, the audience) that they aren't sexist and congrating then for it seemed dumb but then they followed it up with a race joke so it seemed like it might have been some sort of meta joke about then being insisitive
Yep, several jokes in Buddy System (and that’s a prime example, most of the others I can think of are in the music videos) are jokes that, unfortunately, are not the clearest as to how far they they are satirizing/making fun of themselves. Personally, after watching all of their content, I have a sense that they are fairly self-aware and are indeed trying to make fun of themselves along with other people who like to make themselves feel better, pat themselves on the back for being not-sexist, not-racist, etc. But it’s not especially clear. I’m afraid many more casual viewers will take those jokes too much at face value.
It’s a problem I tend to have with a lot of satire/comedians in general. You have to know your audience, and they have to know you, in order to be on the same page with a joke of that nature. But I do think they are trying their best, both at being decent people and at the comedy. Most of the time their comedy hits the right note, but that is one that after a few viewings I did have some second thoughts about. Perhaps it would have went over better if another character besides one of them was the one being congratulated for passing the “sexism test”... or just skipped that entirely and focused on side-eyeing the character who clearly did not pass it. Maybe?
