So can we talk about how the book Merry has in Hifuu Club Activity Record ep 2 is a mixture of several actual official Touhou printworks? (specifically PMiSS and SoPM, written in-universe by Akyuu)
I’m getting around to posting a bunch of stuff I’ve been procrastinating on!! So this was from a couple of weeks ago. For Valentines Day, I made Amandi a coupon book thing and one of the coupons was a dessert of her choice. We really like macarons but they’re incredibly expensive (around $4 each at specialty shops.. ouch), so we decided to try making them ourselves. (It WAS supposed to be a dessert made by me for her but I think we have more fun when we work together ♥)
We decided on RenMerry flavors. The Renko one is Tiramisu, and the Merry one is Cheesecake. Unfortunately the Renko one was supposed to be darker (to resemble her clothes) but it still felt Renko-esque to us regardless.
Although I had made macarons before in the past, it was years ago, when I was first starting in culinary school. I didn’t do a very good job back then, and I knew how notoriously hard they are to make, so I wanted to be very very prepared. In the end, although they had some flaws, they definitely came out very cute and delicious.
Each batch was done with a different method. The Merry one was done with the original French meringue method, and the Renko one was done with the Italian meringue method. Renko’s was more of a pain, but came out better imo.
The recipes we used were somewhat inspired by two of Hanse’s recipes, but not quite. I had quite a bit of fun making my own filling for Renko’s in particular. Hanse’s recipe didn’t include mascarpone cheese which is something well known for going in tiramisu. I also added a bit of instant coffee somewhere in there, don’t remember where.
We ended up with macarons for like.... a week and a half. I’d estimate we made about 120 shells, so 60 macarons. It was a lot of hard work but definitely more satisfying (and less expensive) than buying from a macaron shop!
*screams silently*
