As the sun set on the canyon, a red #fox pranced right in front of us. I leapt out of the truck as it paused and looked back. A second later it ran vertically up the red rock canyon wall behind and disappeared along with the last rays of sun. Last night's #HerpingAdventure seemed to start off great. We flipped a bitch seeing a snake on the road very soon into our #roadcruising, and got excited when we realized it was a rattler! We held our breath as we grabbed the hooks and flashlight, hoping that it was alive. Sadly, if we were there 5 minutes earlier it might have been. Longtail Salamander (Eurycea longicauda)
Two variations, one normal, one not so normal. They normally have that black speckled pattern running along its body. However, at this particular locale, every once in a while I’ll roadcruise a patternless specimen. It’s a pretty beautiful mutation if you ask me. Be sure to avoid the pretty colors you see on the roads at night. Too many amphibians fall victim to speeding cars especially on rural roads. If there’s a safe place to pull over, hop out and help them across. It’s a nice way to make your mark on this amazing planet.
