Binocular Effect The binocular effect is a classic frame-within-a-frame composition. While it’s primarily used to give a character’s point of view, it also can create a creepy voyeuristic feeling. There are two ways to achieve the effect. The in-camera approach is to cut a binocular shape in a dark piece of cardboard or felt and place it between the camera and the subject. There’s a nice tutorial on this method at https://youtu.be/Jea-BFhYOkI The more conventional method is to create the effect in post. Here’s a link to a tutorial using Adobe Premier https://youtu.be/YpQpIDu82xo. For Final Cut Pro check out https://youtu.be/5Tt9afpunU8 The example is from “Détour” by French director @MichelGondry. Sponsored by Apple, this fantasy road pic is the current Mobile Movie of the Week. Three-wheel Protagonist of “Détour” The current Mobile Movie of the Week is “Détour” by the celebrated French director @MichelGondry. Sponsored by Apple, this 2017 road pic features a lost tricycle. The 11-minute movie is filled with visual surprises. Mobile Movie of the Week: “Détour” The road pic genre has featured all sorts of protagonists: comedians (Hope & Crosby in “The Road to Hong Kong); astronauts (“2001”); female fugitives (“Thelma & Louise”); and even sentient automobiles (“Cars”). In 2017 @MichelGondry added a new type: a tricycle. Best known for “directing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” in this 11-minute family odyssey—sponsored by Apple—Gondry demonstrates the versatility of the then state-of-the-end iPhone 7.
