I was raised by a single mom for half of my life. The flashes of fleeting memories about my biological father is exactly that - fleeting. And since late grade school, the closest thing I’ve had to a father has pretty much always been there for me.
But he’s strange.
Would he take a bullet for me? Definitely
Would he drop whatever he was doing to get to me when I truly needed him? Absolutely.
Is he hardworking? Yup.
Is he a family man? I would say so.
But is he honest? Not always.
Does he know how to comfort and encourage his children? Not particularly well.
Does his form of parenting border on verbal abuse? Sadly so.
Has his parenting nurtured parts of me that I would consider anxiety-driven or unhealthy? ... yes.
It’s a sad truth but yes. The answers to all these questions gives him a solid C in parenting.
Do I love him? Yes.
Do I hate him? No.
Do I resent him? In part.
I bring this topic to the table because I’m a 26 year old woman who’s getting ready to move forward with some big steps: moving out, getting married, and pursuing hobbies more seriously. One thing to know about my dad is that he’s a old-fashioned, fairly disgruntled, and merit-based man. That “merit-based” part especially applies towards the man in my life and myself especially.
To be continued... Part 2 coming soon.
