Roaming Bill Shock and How to Avoid It
The methods of communication have greatly progressed since the invention of the telegraph and the telephone, and if you would, for example, get a chance to interview the Wizard of Menlo Park, Thomas Alba Edison, and show him how the modern smart phones function, he would surely be taken aback by the great progress mankind had made since the invention of telegraph and telephone. He would also be surely happy that their sacrifices in the past were not in vain.
With the great technological progress in both the means of communications and transportation, the world has slowly evolved into a “global village” wherein the far-flung places and countries of the world are readily made accessible and connected, allowing everyone to travel from one country to another and still not lose communication with one’s relatives and friends back home.
How Roaming System Greatly Enhanced International Communication?
The process of calling someone else outside of one’s country was previously very cumbersome several decades ago. Without the roaming system at hand, international calls previously required several steps and call transfer from one operator to another. International calls were indeed previously circuitous. However, with the onset of the roaming system and the development of smart phones, a guy who is traveling abroad can easily call anyone back home if he has a roaming SIM. Roaming automatically allows a mobile phone subscriber to make calls, receive calls, receive and send data, and even use other mobile services.
Most home networks have their own geographical areas wherein their subscribers can freely use their services without a snag. But when subscribers go beyond the geographical areas of their network providers, their phones will automatically connect to any available network within that area, and this network is referred to as a visited network. Each mobile phone has a subscriber identity, and when a phone connects to a visited network, the visited network readily recognizes the identity of the roaming SIM of the subscriber. This is made possible because roaming system is generally backed up by authentication, authorization, mobility management, and even by accounting billing procedures. Likewise, most mobile subscribers have Global Service Roaming Capability, and this capability makes it possible for mobile SIMs to connect to a visited network.
There are roaming agreements among networks, and these roaming agreements are in standardized form, although the details of most roaming processes may vary from one cellular network to another. The usual problem, however, of many mobile roaming users is that many of them are not really familiar with how the roaming billing is wrought. Roaming fees are usually charged based on every minute that a roaming subscriber uses. Hence, if you are not wary enough of the number of minutes that you consume when making international calls or when using roaming data usage, you may end up with a roaming bill shock. You should therefore beforehand ask your mobile service provider about the roaming tariff control existing in the place where you will be using your roaming service. The tariffs of visited networks may include tax, and for this reason, if you want to avoid any bill shock, you should beforehand figure out the best roaming plan that would be appropriate to your roaming need.
