I only say this because I was reviewing Ralsei's version of the prophecy and I saw this:
Which is very clearly two knights???
I have a personal theory, which is that every version of the prophecy is true in its own way. While there is some room for interpretation, I choose to think that we have been provided no false information
But then i see this and want to abandon that mindset entirely, cause why the hell would there be two knights here????
I think that its one of the more daunting parts of being a DessKnight believer, knowing that to have her be the knight, something tragic had to have happened; she's there, people know about her, but she in her current form is unreachable, not quite the same
Carol probably knows some of what happened to her, why she is like this, and yet still has to pretend her daughter is missing
Whether you believe in Roaring Amalgam Theory or not (which if you don't know about you should def check me out!), I think the hardest part of learning about the knight is knowing what it would have to take away from the characters
Speculating that the knight is one of the people we know about does feel better, maybe the darkness just changes them differently to other lightners. But then you have to get into why that is, and the answer from there is much less satisfying
I think that the clearest answer to alot of these knight questions can be answered by Roaring Amalgam Theory, but even past that, can be answered by Dess no longer being with us
CarolKnight is a valid theory, and that's why I feel like it isn't true
(Spoliers and speculation obs)
CarolKnight has probably the most in game evidence behind it of many theories, I would say even more then DessKnight. The katanas all around her house, the 'I'll be.... right there" and then she is right there. She actively takes the guitar away from Susie, which contains the shelter code. Dess and her both share design features with the knight, but Carol's antlers seem to be more sharp then her daughter's. She calls Kris at the end of the weird route, she seems to be aware of the soul, she has snowflakes everywhere in her house, the knight has snowflake attacks.
And the motivation is there as well. While this is less obvious, the more observant player could assume that she is looking for Dess, or even signs of her, in the darkworlds. Her violence towards the Fun Gang could be because of their goals to stop the Roaring, or for any other list of unknown reasons. If she is the knight, she is just as antagonistic to Kris and Susie in the lightworld and the darkworld.
All outside appearances point to CarolKnight
And I think that characters inside the game will come to the same conclusion
Bit of a tangent: A sort of mini-theory that I like is that Deltarune plays with classic JRPG tropes, and an example of this that I truly believe is that Susie, not Kris, is the main character. She is the one who explores these worlds on the surface level, and she influences the motions of the story (she is the one who has ideas, and Kris and Ralsei support her)
So Susie, with her limited understanding of her world (compared to Kris that is, or even most theorists lol), will see alot of these surface level CarolKnight connections and will make the exact same assumptions, pulling the action of the game towards it.
I really hate to say this in the body of a theory, cause it makes me sound genuinely insane, but I think that CarolKnight is a red herring, a trap for Susie to fall down, which will distract her (and less observant fans) from the real candiate
I am not saying that people are dumb for believing in CarolKnight, it is definitely one of the theories that have alot of evidence going for it. I do want to at least share why I think it is impossible, and not dismiss it without just reasoning
It is obvious that the Knight is not a darkner, as it is able to form its own dark fountains, but I don't think it's as clear as assuming that it is just a normal lightner as well.
We have seen lightners that have been changed by the darkest of darks, the knight is different. If it is Carol, just as she is, why does she grow in size to such an extent, why does she not resemble her at all? How come Carol possesses this shadowy liquid form that she can manipulate at will, and not like Berdly. What is the key difference between her and Berdly that let's her have these powers
I say that there is none, and therefore the knight cannot be any lightner we have seen in game. It has to be someone not here, who can have their form be manipulated to the point that they are no longer themself
A theory that I subscribe to is Roaring Amalgam Theory, the idea that Dess formed into an amalgam, which describes many of these strange qualities about the knight (check out the video pinned to my page if you want to learn more), but I think that it's clear that whatever the knight is, it cannot just be a lighnter, something crazy, and permanent, must have happened to create a being like it
CarolKnight has alot of evidence behind it, and for characters like Susie it will be the most logical conclusion to them. However, with our greater understanding of the world of Deltarune, i believe that we can look past it, and seek out other candidates
Small things that I think Roaring Amalgam Theory kinda proves / works well with / is cool / idk
(RAT is where knight is Dess + Kris' soul in an amalgam, for more details check out the video pinned on my page)
(Spoliers and speculation obs)
Why are Carol and Kris working together? And also kinda with the knight
Cause they both have stakes in the knight, for Carol it's her daughter, and for Kris it's the other half of him
If Dess is the knight, why is she still considered missing?
Cause she cannot revert back into Dess, we have not seen amalgams do that.
How can Dess be the knight and also the one trapped in the code
This one's a bit more speculation, but I feel like she can be easily lost in the darkness of the knight instead of being like physically in the code. Her spirit is trapped somewhere, but her body can still easily be the frame of the knight
Why do darkworlds made by Kris and the Knight look the same, while the one made by Susie is different?
Cause Kris and the knight are the same! In some way
How come Kris and the knight communicate to eachother?
I think I just solved out one of the biggest flaws in Roaring Amalgam Theory using Flowey, and it completely solidifies who makes up the Roaring Knight
(This is kinda a crack theory i must admit. If youre really into undertale theorising, then this might make more sense, but please be aware that I will ramble alot with this post. This makes alot of sense to me tho, so hopefully u can follow along as well!)
The amalgams in Undertale as we know them are nowhere near as stable as the knight, who is able to completely control its form. They have irregular sprites, and are not homogeneous, being the parts of monsters rather than a continuous being
This was for a while a major sticking point for Roaring Amalgam Theory. As far as I was aware, no amalgam could be able to perform some of the strong attacks or complicated plotting that the knight can. Even if I excused it as other universe shenanigans, it would be disingenuous, not a real attempt at solving the issue
In my desperation, I looked back at the source of all my theorising, the True Lab. I read through every entry again, trying to figure out if there was anything else I could extrapolate to help fix this glaring issue
That's when a series of realisations hit me, so hard that it made me completely double down on the components of the Roaring Knight
So... Flowey is kinda an amalgam, right?
Entry Number 8: I've chosen a candidate. I haven't told ASGORE yet, because I want to surprise him with it... In the center of his garden, there's something special. The first golden flower, that grew before all the others. The flower from the outside world. It appeared just before the queen left. I wonder... What happens when something without a SOUL gains the will to live?
Like think about it, he is a flower who was given the weaker determination of the monsters that made up the amalgams, and was himself turned into new, inspired life
Flowey is the most stable amalgam in Undertale. He is able to hold an actual conversation, he can do damaging attacks, and he also has the uncanny ability to change his face (very amalgam-like!)
Now I understand that there is a massive difference between Flowey and the knight. If you are to believe that DessKnight is canon, then Dess is the vessel, a monster with a soul. Flowey worked because he is a souless being.
I concede that this is true, and that the knight and Flowey are not perfect parallels. Despite this, I still think we can track Flowey to see some truth in the knight
In Undertale, the amalgams are only given a piece of the fallen humans souls
Entry Number 5: I've done it. Using the blueprints, I've extracted it from the human SOULs. I believe this is what gives their SOULs the strength to persist after death. The will to keep living... The resolve to change fate. Let's call this power... "Determination."
The determination is extracted from the souls, they are no longer whole. The monsters are injected with only pieces, and they do manage to live on, but only in a limited capacity
We do see the result of a monster getting a human soul. The Omega Flowey and Asriel fights are powered by the determination of the fallen humans, without them Asriel turns back into Flowey
When given access to a full human soul, an amalgam is able to have better control of their body, become powerful, become unstoppable
This is why the Roaring Knight differs from the amalgams in the True Lab. It, like Omega Flowey, is strengthened by a human soul
For the knight, this is Kris' Soul. It explains their innate connection, the collaboration, why we are able to control them in the first place
For how this could work, please consider the following scenario:
Dess is dying. Something bad happened, something that Kris witnessed, maybe caused. They are in the forest, far away from anyone that might help
In a moment of desperation, they place their soul into the centre of Dess's chest. Maybe hoping that their lifeforce can keep her alive for some time, until they are able to reach for help
But that's not what happens. A white orb forms around their soul, trapping it within. For a second nothing happens, but then her body begins to contort, bones break, mouth shouting for help, but no words come out
They can only look for a few seconds, before they have to hide behind a tree, look away from the horror infront of them
When everything becomes quiet again, they are finally able to peak around the trunk. But Dess is not there. Instead, hovering above a patch of flattened grass, is a monochrome being, seemingly made of shadows. No longer in pain, no longer as aware
The Roaring Knight is created, with Dess's Body as the vessel, and Kris' Soul as the lifeforce
Yay I'm back at uni, which means more time to write out my theories instead of just thinking about them
If you are at all familiar with Roaring Amalgam Theory, you'll know I think that the knight is an amalgamation of Dess' body and Kris' original soul.
Now I want to go into why I think the 'amalgam' part is important
Ever since the release of the new chapters, I've paid more attention to theories about who the knight could potentially be, with many using the same pieces I have to construct it. Most though do not take the next step and formalise the knight into an amalgam, either due to not seeing the connections, or to avoid some of the connotations the theory has. I want to discuss some of the reasons I think that actually it is / will be important to the knight and those it interacts with
I think one of the more uncomfortable conclusions RAT makes is that the changes made to Dess are most likely permanent. In Undertale we see no evidence that could suggest that an amalgam can be separated back into its precursors. To use another example, even after Asriel is released from Flowey in the True Pacifist ending, it is heavily implied that it is only temporary, and that he will not be around by the time the underground opens up.
So when I say that the knight is an amalgam, there are people who associate being one with being essentially dead. This can be somewhat confronting, I think many people (including me in some way) want to be able to fully interact with characters like Dess (and to an extent Kris), and the idea of them being permanently fused into this destructive being can feel unsatisfactory.
I agree with that in some way. But I also think that the evidence for RAT is strong enough that it becomes foolish to ignore it just for an idea of how a story should form
While it might not be the favoured narrative for the characters, there are ways that I think it actually works for the better
Deltarune can be characterised as a story about loss. Kris is someone who has experienced loss of agency and choice. Susie has been excluded by her peers, causing her to act out and continue a cycle of negativity.
One of the biggest that can be felt throughout Hometown is that of December Holiday. Once an ambitious and bright girl, she is now only lost
Carol is hit hard. In her grief she keeps everything the same, not wanting to lose anything, any detail, any memory to time. She preserves her room in forever disarray, dutifully hanging onto every ornament her youngest makes. The idea of someone disturbing this sends her into a rage, because without the sameness, She is gone
I don't know when Carol became aware of the knight, and what it is made of. Maybe she knew from the start the fate that had befallen her, or the discovery was only recently made. Either way, it is clear that at least her and Kris are in some kind of alliance with the knight. They conspire behind the scenes, waiting for private moments to assert their allegiance to each other, and the strange being they have a keen interest in
This groups' intentions remain somewhat unclear. Maybe the hope to facilitate the Roaring in some vain attempt to resurrect Dess. Maybe they hope to stop it and try to save the girl melded inside the knight. Maybe Asgore is involved, or maybe they keep him at arms length to ensure that he is not getting any closer to the core of the conspiracy
But I believe that ultimately, this group will not succeed in their goal. Dess, if she comes back at all, cannot escape the fate that most amalgams succumb to. Even if she can ultimately be separated from the human soul, the same way Asriel did, the knight's bony form does not give me much hope that she is far away from death.
When the Roaring occurs (as I believe it will by the end of the game), I do not think that in either route we will be able to fully save Dess, if at all
Its been 2 weeks, and I've officially past 1.5k views!
This will be my last time i promote my video. I am very proud of how many people have seen it, especially considering its my first time doing anything this big.
Massive thanks to anyone who has engaged with or shared my video. Hopefully this will not be my last attempt at making something so big, and I will be able to share my other theories at last
Anyways if you havent seen it, please consider giving it a watch and commenting if you did like it!
