“Fantine’s Death,” US 3rd National Tour, 1996. Laurie Beechman as Fantine, Rob Evan as Jean Valjean.
What must it have been like for Laurie to act this scene, or for the rest of the cast to witness it? She was living with ovarian cancer at the time and would succumb to it just two years later. I only hope that in some way, performing this role helped her to prepare for her own final illness and passing and to face it with inner peace.
Her warm, rich voice is beautifully suited to expressing a mother’s love, and despite its great capacity for power, she sounds so gentle and poignantly frail here, especially at the end with her soft, quavering “...wake!”
Rob’s Valjean is effective too, singing with both urgency and tenderness.
A truly touching performance.

I am sure Emma Watson is a decent singer, but not for this role, and neither for Belle. Having someone else dub her singing is nothing against her or her overall talent.
An action star may have doubles to perform dangerous stunts, but that does not mean they are less heroic or talented.
