The ruin of castle Freienstein, (photo- Wikipedia) This is orally transmitted story from Odenwald region. Someone named Conrad Schäfer from Gammelsbach said: “A few years ago I looked after an orchard on the Hirschhörner Höhe. This was not far from Freienstein, the old castle. Exactly twelve o'clock at night, I saw two fiery carriages rattling dreadfully. Each of those were drawn by four fiery steeds. The carriages were just coming down from Freienstein. Those came to my sight very often and terrified me every time.  Reason was, I could see people in the carriages – their mouth and eyes emitting hellish flames.” **the reference to castle Freienstein is first found in 13th century though this could be an older construction. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times. This was an important landmark of Gammelsbach valley which helped the rulers of Erbach to secure their southern border as well as control the trade routes of the region till the time of Thirty Year’s War. Extensive excavations were done here by 1968 and 1981 revealing interesting history of it's previous occupants. Stories evolving around the castle is, therefore, normal. A local legend about one owner of the castle, which is not found in Grimms collection is: he was a nobleman from Schaffhausen named Hermann Künsch, a Rober Baron. Engaged in extortion and robbery, he kidnapped people. One of the kidnapped prisoners a saintly man, to save whom people attacked the Burg with fire arrows. The castle collapsed but as they immediately started celebrating, they forgot to release the prisoners. Also the good man was burnt to death along with the others in the castle. Thus the castle fell in 1443.
