FAIRY TALE ART SERIES | L. Frank Baum's 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' | PART 1 "Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with Uncle Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Em, who was the farmer’s wife."

I'm really excited to start sharing the follow-up to my previous fairy tale designs with Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid. I went back and read through the entirety of L Frank Baum's novel, and followed pretty closely to physical descriptions he described, but still left a lot to my own imagination and personal tastes.

To start off the series of designs, here is my own interpretation of Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. I stuck to Baum's visual description of the pair - their colors sapped by Kansas living, in contrast to Dorothy. I originally kept her out of this image, but decided to include her to show the visual difference between them and her.

Tiger Woman

A piece done for Slant’d in their latest 2026 literary mag publication, Lore.

Inspired by a section of the ungnyeo/dangun story. The bear and the tiger eating mugwort and garlic to become human; the bear succeeded and the tiger failed… I wanted to visualize a narrative “what-if” to tell a story on the extinct Korean tiger and a relation to colonialism, imperialism/capitalism, national mythos, and a lot more than I can fit in one description (frankly more than I could possibly fit in one art piece!)

In 2021 I graduated from gymnasiet (swedish equivalent of upper secondary school / highschool) and my big final project was to illustrate the Norwegian folktale Dapplegrim. I've posted some of these illustrations allready but here's all of them together. You can read the folktale in The Project Gutenberg eBook of Popular Tales from the Norse or the summary on Wikipedia. If I revisited this now I would do a lot of things differently, but bear in mind that I made all of these illustrations when I was 18 and under a bit of a time crunch.

Still doing kelpie research. No one does shape shifters like the Scots:

A Water-horse in man’s shape came to a house in which there was a woman alone; at the time she was boiling water in a clay vessel (croggan), such as was in use before iron became common. The Water-horse, after looking on for some time, drew himself nearer to her, and said in a snuffling voice: “It is time to begin courting, Sarah, daughter of John, son of Finlay.” “It is time, it is time,” she replied, “when the little pitcher boils.” In a while it repeated the same words and drew itself nearer. She gave the same answer drawing out the time as best she could, till the water was boiling hot. As the snuffling youth was coming too near she threw the scalding water between his legs, and he ran out of the house roaring and yelling with pain.
