Day Two: Settling In
A squeal cut through the early morning quiet, echoing off the walls. Robbi, previously lounging in the upper sitting area, jumped up just as Jai came running up the stairs.
“What’s going on!?” Jai cried at the same time Robbi asked “Ian, are you alright?”
Ian, it appeared, was not alright. He had leaped into the arms of Tommy, who was lucky to catch him. Tommy’s eyes were still blurry from sleep before Ian’s hand clawed into his face, covering his eyes. Tommy sighed. He really needed some coffee.
“There’s a spider over there!” Ian shrieked, pointing into the corner near where Tommy now stood.
“A….spider….” Tommy grumbled. Had he been fully awake and caffeinated, he would have been ecstatic to be holding Ian in his arms. But Tommy was not a morning person, and he was half tempted to dump Ian on the floor. Instead, he carried him down the stairs.
“Don’t worry. I’m sure Robbi and Jai will find and kill it. Want some coffee?” Tommy said as he sat Ian on the couch in the living room. Ian nodded, still looking stricken.
Upstairs, Robbi and Jai stood head to head, both bent at the waist. They were staring into the corner Ian had pointed at.
“Surely he can’t mean that, can he?” Jai whispered. Robbi just shrugged. In the corner was a small, brown spider, perhaps the size of a dime. Jai shook his head, and with a “sorry, buddy” squashed the spider.
Just as Tommy was handing Ian his cup of coffee, the unmistakable sound of Robbi laughing uproariously drifted down the stairs. Tommy, having downed half a cup of coffee already, couldn’t help but join in as Ian scowled in his direction.
