The dam was built in 1917 to feed the Edison canal which brought water to the Estelle power station at Porto d'Adda a few kilometers lower down the valley. . It was built with a Renaissance style, inspired by the eclectic tradition of Lombardy. . When opened in 1920, it was the most powerful power station in Europe. (at Robbiate)
