This baby was keeping her up already. Apparently she had picked up on Jessica’s bad habits, and decided that sleep was entirely not necessary. Cravings for chocolate milkshakes and fries? Now that’s what really mattered, according to the baby. It was hard to argue with that, even though it was ass o’clock. Jessica was just walking now, feeling huge and enjoying that feeling a little bit, though the cold of the milkshake combined with the wind made her shiver as she walked.
There was a sudden feeling of heat. A burst of warm air. Jessica furrowed her brow, glancing around. She was near Robbie’s place, this was his neighborhood. If something was going down, he’d want to know about it. She tossed her milkshake in a trash can and pulled out her phone as she headed down the alley where the air felt warmest. There was a strange orange flicker against the bricks. But her phone was dead, of course, and she cursed, reaching for her camera instead. She crept along slowly, just peering her head and hands around the edge of the alleyway.
Ash. The air smelled like ash. And fire. It smelled like hell, and she knew because she had been there, she had seen it. But even that couldn’t have prepared for what she saw at the other end of the alley. A skeletal figure, a flaming chain in his hands. His entire head engulfed in flame. Jessica’s fingers clicked the shutter button on her camera, but she couldn’t quite process it. And then a memory came back to her.
A few years ago, I made a deal. Gave a demon --- a Spirit of Vengeance free reign of my body in exchange for my life, for my vengeance. Hell’s part of the package.
Jessica stared more closely at the flaming figure. It looked like Robbie, apart from the obvious head-on-fire. It was the same clothes, the same posture, the same anger. But there was something more to it — the Spirit of Vengeance. Christ, she thought that was a goddamn metaphor. Or like, a shitty superhero name. But this must be the Rider himself. “Did I... interrupt something?” she called out, breath in her throat.
