Elton John's 90's career followed the era's zeitgeist. However, he did move within them in a way George Harrison did during the 80's, i.e. he followed his own lead. Sure, Duets may not seem like such a proposal, because the disc resembles a label obligation. Still, this should be understood as a surface reading of the record, since the platter surprises us. Of course, some don't gel well with Mr. John – this is a hazard you have to accept with this type of LPs –, yet there are cases in the vein of Chris Rea that you wish to hear more of. You see, I regret he and Mr. John didn't work together later on, since their piece finds them complementing each other well, though I do think their styles mesh together succintly.
