One Times Square is easily among the city’s most iconic addresses. Before the New York Times moved in, however, the area was known as Longacre Square. Adolph Ochs, the newspaper’s publisher, managed to convince the city to both build a subway station beneath the building and rename the area “Times Square.” Early stages of construction on the Times’ new headquarters, seen here in photographs by Robert Bracklow, signified a major milestone in New York City’s development.
