Loveless Way by Seattle based electropop artist Belgian Fog, aka Robert Dale, is quite the propulsive jam. The bittersweet, yet bright tune fell into my inbox over the weekend, and I knew I had to share the moment I heard it. Robert Dale is, after all, an employee of Seattle's KEXP, which I'm a fan of for all the amazing studio performance clips they always share on their YouTube channel. The soaring production, staccato beats, and Dale's delightful falsettos are an addictive combo, indeed.
Belgian Fog is the alias Robert Dale, who happens to work at the famed KEXP in Seattle.
An obvious student of music, his latest release has drawn comparisons ranging from Depeche Mode and New Order to James Murphy, The Magnetic Fields and Naked & The Famous.
"Loveless Way" is an electronic pop with an 80s tinge.
Helpless and Loveless
If you aren't listening too carefully, you might actually think this is a happy electro-pop love song! But don't be fooled, this is not your average Taylor Swift dance along (though you will definitely be dancing). This song is messed up and Robert Dale's reassures us of that by delievering heartless and twisted lyrics. However, Dale's voice is hard to resist and his honesty sheds some light on his somewhat forgivable and helpless nature. “I’d rather stay trapped in a loveless way, than try to make the pain go" Dale sings. The upbeat tune is completely deceiving, but if you're like me, you are bound to fall in love with it regardless of the cynical undertones.
