In the fourth grade, Robert Fairchild had a class assignment to write an essay called “My Special Place.” The Salt Lake City native, who began dancing when he was four, had already shown great promise winning dance competitions. He wrote that his special place was on Broadway. “Because there is this guy named Gene Kelly and he’s a dancer just like me. And I want to be just like him someday. And I also want to be in a movie.”
Why Gene Kelly? “He made dancing cool,” explains Fairchild who was admitted to the esteemed School of American Ballet, New York City Ballet’s official school, when he was 15. Growing up it was anything but cool for him to be a dancer. “I got made fun of a lot,” he shares. “Gene Kelly was so athletic, so dynamic, so charismatic, so charming. He was incredible. To have an idol like that pave the way was really special.”
