Fire crews attend to the wreckage of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning, an American fighter aircraft, at RAF Duxford (February 10th, 1944).
The American pilot, Lieutenant Robert N. Gore, had repeatedly “buzzed the field”, and crashed the plane, landing on top of a truck. Gore survived, but the truck driver was killed. Gore was charged with involuntary manslaughter, but was acquitted in May 1944, although he had to pay a fine of $660 for damaging the plane.
