Argent - God Gave Rock And Roll To You
Robert Henrit of the Roulettes, Unit 4+2, Argent and the Kinks
"Keith Moon was the most natural drummer I have ever seen, and completely unique. He was unschooled, and because of his technique (or lack of it), The Who played in a certain way. He simply didn't worry about which hand he should be hitting the cymbal with. If the left hand was available, he'd happily use that one. Once, he turned up at the flat I was living in at three in the morning – after the Speakeasy – and said, 'Dear boy, I want to tell you something. Can I come in for a cup of tea?' I let him in, and he told me how I'd always been his favourite drummer, and how he'd learned everything from me. I have a letter that Pete Townshend sent after Moonie's death, telling me too how I'd always been Moonie's favourite drummer. In other respects, I always looked on Moonie as being a flawed genius – because he'd work hard at preparation. If he threw a TV out of a window, it would be working all the way down to the ground because he'd attached it to a long aerial and mains lead. One night in Rotterdam, I wandered into his dressing room, and he was sitting there with a crate of twelve bottles of Remy Martin brandy and a DRB Special Gretsch snare drum – a collector's item. He had a drink in his hand, and invited me to have one. 'Dear boy,' he said as he handed me a bottle, 'This one's for you. The rest are for me.' The snare drum was for me too, but I was too embarrassed to take it. I certainly regret it now. To be frank, I don't know whether Moonie was an alcoholic. I never really gave it a thought. He would turn up in his Bentley at lunchtime outside my drum shop in Wardour Street, and start drinking, expecting me to join him. All I know is, his doctor advised him that drinking brandy would be better for him than drinking Scotch."
