NINE

September 9, 1995

NINE is a musical with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Arthur Kopit based on Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical film 8 ½.  It was originally created as a class-project in the BMI Music Theatre Workshop in 1973 with a book by Mario Fratti.  Set in early 1960s Venice, Italy, it focuses on film director Guido Contini, who is dreading his 40th birthday and facing a midlife crisis, which is blocking his creative impulses and entangling him in a web of romantic difficulties.

The original Broadway production opened in 1982 directed by Tommy Tune and ran for 729 performances. The musical won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.  It was revived on Broadway in 2003 and has enjoyed both community and regional productions worldwide (see below).  A film adaptation appeared in 2009.  

NINE opened at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse on September 6 and ran through October 15, 1995.  It was directed by Robert Johanson, with choreography by D.J. Salisbury, musical direction by Jim Coleman, scenery by Michael Anania, costumes by Gregg Barnes, and lighting by Timothy Hunter.  It starred Paul Schoeffler (Guido), Glory Crampton (Claudia), Judy McLane (Luisa), Lauren Kennedy (Carla), Judith McCauley (Guido's Mother), Stephanie Pope (Liliane), Matthew Fasano (Young Guido), Gregory Butler (Leo Darling), Jan Neuberger (Stephanie Necrophorus), Sally Ann Tumas (Our Lady of the Spa), Celeste DiSimone (Mama Maddelena), and Robin Irwin (Whore).

I hadn't seen the original Tommy Tune NINE on Broadway, but had seen carbon copies in multiple community venues (with varying degrees of success). This production was re-imagined with the help of its creator Maury Yeston. Although Guido was the only man in the show on Broadway, Paper Mill's had a few men in the ensemble (notably Greg Butler), which pleased Yeston because the choral songs were enriched by their lower notes.  Robert Johanson's production was also notable (to some) for showing side boob!  They were in a spa, after all.  

I don't think a finer creative team could be assembled for a musical: Johanson, Anania, and Barnes were a powerhouse team at the Mill, creating many memorable shows.  The cast was just as memorable, with standout performances from Mill favorites Glory Crampton and two of the ‘Judys’: McLane and McCauley.  [As a side note, there were many ‘Judys’ at Paper Mill over the years, also including Blazer and Kaye.]  I don't think the seductive Eartha Kitt-like Stephanie Pope will banish memories of Liliane Montevecchi on Broadway, but hell... who could? Montevecchi would shine at the Mill in Gigi and Follies, both times wielding one of Gregg Barnes' feather boas.  

During the production I got to meet both Yeston and Fratti (the genuine Italian in the group) and both had interesting stories.  Although the show is not one of my favorites, it has a rabid fan base, especially (naturally) among female performers.  I think Yeston is one of the theatre's best composers, writing deep,  lush melodies.  His scores for Grand Hotel and Titanic (two 'sinking' hotels of a bygone era) are equally memorable.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

March 12, 1992

GREAT EXPECTATIONS is a play adapted by Robert Johanson from the 1861 novel of the same name by Charles Dickens.  Set among marshes of Kent and in London, England, in the early to mid-1800s, it tells the story of an orphan named Pip, from childhood to a mature man facing the world.  It was Dickens' 13th novel and is now considered one of the greatest novels in the English language.  It has been adapted numerous times for film, stage, and television. The script is currently available for amateur leasing through Dramatic Publishing Company.  

GREAT EXPECTATIONS by Robert Johanson had its world premiere at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse on February 12, 1992.  It was directed by Johanson, who was also the Playhouse's Artistic Director.   It starred Michael James Reed as Pip, with Elizabeth Franz as Miss Havisham, and Nancy Bell as Estella - among many others.  Settings were by Michael Anania, costumes by Gregg Barnes, lighting by Timothy Hunter, and original music by Albert Evans.  

I saw this production two years before I ever stepped foot in the Playhouse as an employee.  I was fond of Dickens, and hadn't had much experience with this story so I was eager to discover it.  I had sat through the entire eight and a half hour Nicholas Nickleby on Broadway, so Great Ex's three hours didn't seem exorbitant.  Unlike the RSC's Nick, however, this was a traditional, lavish, staging.  Johanson tried not to omit any major characters or stories, and for the most part, he was successful.  I remember thinking that he might have omitted The Aged P(arent) to save a few minutes. The trouble with Dickens is that his great attention to detail and shear length (writing, as he originally did, in serial format), don't especially lend themselves to a two or three hour stage play or film. The other challenge is that (thanks perhaps to Oliver!) Dickens on stage seems to want to be a musical. This was not the case here, although there was original music by Albert Evans. 

My other reason for attending was to see my very favorite stage actor, Elizabeth Franz, as Miss Havisham.  I had seen Franz as Sister Mary Ignatius several times and her quirky yet hypnotic stage presence made her ideal to play the disillusioned recluse bride.  She did not disappoint.  She had also played crazy Alma Rudder on my favorite soap opera “Another World.”  In 1999 she rightfully claimed a Tony for her harrowing portrayal of Linda Loman in Death of a Salesman.  Although she had previously played the Wicked Witch of the West for Johanson in the Playhouse’s popular staging of The Wizard of Oz, I had not seen it.  When The Wizard moved across the river to Madison Square Garden, her role was taken by -- Roseann Barr.  No kidding. 

Two years later, Johanson would attempt a second Dickens adaptation, A Tale of Two Cities, which I thought was probably the weakest of his staged novels. My favorite (as already discussed in this space on March 7) was Jane Eyre. All had basically the same production team and were staged on a level of excellence and visual awe that may never be seen again.  I continue to like Dickens and – although she hasn't been acting much lately – am still a fan of Ms. Franz.  And - for what it is worth - it provided one of my favorite Paper Mill poster / program covers of all time!
