Stereotypically, one hallmark of young directors on shoestring budgets is a lack of technical proficiency, but Robert Machoian's stunning "The Killing of Two Lovers" (his fourth feature) has style and expertise for days.

The Killing of Two Lovers (dir. Robert Machoian).
It goes to deeply personal places in testing the limits of its characters while maintaining a very grounded level of intimate drama. Machoian’s absorbing camera shifts and moves with this family to very ordinary places yet fleshes a sense of underlying darkness. Its cinematic vision is also particularly impressive considering its narrative constraints and the usual lean indie drama appeal. It certainly takes advantage of a very stressful conceit.

David desperately tries to keep his family of six together during a separation from his wife. They both agree to see other people but David struggles to grapple with his wife's new relationship.
Marital dramas are not my favourite. But in this case it's easy to make an exception. It's very intense, but still restrained. You can constantly feel his pain.
I thought the arrangement that the kids live with her was a little unfair. But in the end that's not the point, the movie's about the pain at the end of a relationship when one partner wants to move on, and the other still hopes it will continue.
The scene in the car with the two of them indicates that the relationship is over.
A "smart" washing machine. Go eff yourself.
