Most children struggle, at some point or another, with fitting in and finding a place where they belong. Every child has their differences and idiosyncrasies that set them apart form one another, but their social nature pushes them to try and find like-minded individuals. Or, at the very least, individuals who will accept them for who they are and allow them to contribute their uniqueness.

Courage of the Blue Boy is a tale depicting a curious young boy and his pet who set out on a journey of exploration and discovery. As they travel, they encounter people who are red and yellow and many other colors, but none that look or act quite like him. Eventually, he finds himself in a multi-hued city, but notices veritable lack of blue. He decides to help color the city with his blue-ness, using his art and personal creations, and helps bring a brand new shade to the city.

Blue boy’s journey to find others he fits in with, and contributing his own color to the city he finds himself is a clear allegory for multiculturalism. With it’s vibrant art work and simple wording, Courage of the Blue Boy acts as a great jumping off point for further discussion with young children on an important topic in a way that is easily understood. This simple, but powerful tale touched the heart of everyone I spoke to about it, and nearly brought tears to my eyes as someone who struggled to find a place of their own growing up and still work hard to find that place today. A highly recommended work for any picture book collection.
