Rob Nicols lecture - Illustrator
Throughout Robs talk, his enthusiasm towards colour, mark making and exploring scale was obvious in his illustrations. These all give an image power and impact, and makes me think about how colour, surface textures and brushwork etc could help communicate the narrative.
One point that stood out to me was that he wants to see that hand crafted aspects in his work. Again the prominent brush marks and textures from different mediums gives a quirkiness and hands on feel to his illustrations. It has really changed my outlook on the importance of mark making and what that can illustrate alone.
Rob’s outlook is ‘say yes to everything’ and take on challenge. He applies his illustrations in many layouts for example phone cases, murals, exhibitions, animations and the list goes on. ‘Don’t put all your eggs in one basket!’ His process of working with clients starts with rough thumbnails; small, quick and different composition ideas. He communicated that the rough stage is so important, working and communicating with people is key. To make his initial ideas more clear he uses blocks of colour in his roughs to create more of a picture of what he's trying to say. This made me think about the importance of the thumbnail stage and communication with the client before the final piece is created.
