These beautiful drawings were made by Robert Weir (1836-1905) during his three-year voyage on the whaler Clara Bell from 1855-1858. This is not a logbook, it is a journal which also contains logbook data but was kept mostly private. He did not go on board entirely voluntarily, as he had gambling debts to pay and had therefore run away from home. After paying these debts and earning some extra money, he left the Clara Bell. He worked in 1862 as engineer aboard USS Richmond, where he also served as a war correspondent for a newspaper. After the war, he renounced the sea and became an engineer on land.
If you would like to read the journal yourself, you can do so here.

An Artist's Studio (1864). John Ferguson Weir (American, 1841-1926). Oil on canvas. LACMA.
An Artist’s Studio depicts Robert Weir writing in his studio, surrounded by his own paintings, drawings, and artist’s equipment, as well as antique furniture, armor, and other artifacts assembled by him, for he was conscientious about the accuracy of the details of his history paintings.
