In honor of Black History Month, we are highlighting the career of master printmaker Robert Blackburn whose dynamic abstract mosaics at 116th Street (6 line) bring the color and movement of the streets above into the station. Having grown up in Harlem studying art, Blackburn founded the famous Printmaking Workshop in Harlem in 1948, and in 2001 MTA Arts & Design commissioned him to create “In Everything There Is A Season”, (2005). Due to poor health, he chose artist Mei-Tei-Sing Smith, a Bearden Fellow at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, to assist him on what would prove to be his last major project. Once completed, his maquettes were enlarged and transformed into ceramic and glass mosaics. Blackburn died in April 2003.
